When Kirrilley’s friend and colleague Karen invited her to join Women’s Fitness Adventures and embark on the transformative Couch to Mountain program, she didn’t hesitate. “I’m not usually impulsive and commit to things quickly, but it didn’t take much to twist my arm,” Kirrilley reflects.
This leap of faith sparked a transformational journey, not just up to the summit of Australia’s highest peak, but one that reshaped Kirrilley’s approach to fitness, self-care, and community.
Taking the First Step
For Kirrilley, the decision to join Women’s Fitness Adventures was both serendipitous and timely. As a busy paramedic, nurse, business owner, and mother, she was struggling to make time for herself. On top of that, health concerns prompted her GP to recommend improving her cardiovascular fitness. “It seemed the planets all aligned timing-wise for me,” she reflects.
Kirrilley’s commitment was solidified after a chat with Yvonne as part of the Couch to Mountain program. “I was so inspired, motivated, and pretty excited about it all,” she shares. “Hiking was something new for me, but Yvonne gave me great confidence that I would reach the summit and put me in a great mindset.”
A Journey of Transformation
Before joining Women’s Fitness Adventures, Kirrilley’s life revolved around caring for others. “I wasn’t really making time for myself or exercising regularly,” she says. But the six-month Couch To Mountain program forced her to carve out space in her busy schedule to prioritise her physical and mental health.
Training alongside Karen provided an extra layer of accountability and motivation. “There’s not an option to make excuses or not show up when someone else is relying on you to turn up too,” Kirrilley explains. Week by week, her dedication paid off, and by Summit Day–the pinnacle of the Couch to Mountain program–she was ready to conquer Mount Kosciuszko.
Reaching the summit of Australia’s highest peak was a proud moment, but it wasn’t her only highlight. The next day, Kirrilley also tackled Dead Horse Gap, a more technical and challenging hike which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Kirrilley has celebrated many milestones in her short time with Women’s Fitness Adventures, not least of all her first ‘bush wee’ which she found to be a bigger mental hurdle than a physical one. She even discovered she can now outpace her 6’2” husband on walks, a feat she had never achieved before! “Now he has to keep his frame on pace with my 5’4” stride,” she laughs.
The Power of Connection
While Kirrilley didn’t join Women’s Fitness Adventures for the social aspect, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of her experience. “I’m actually quite an introvert and prefer to spend time not with other people outside my social circle,” she shares. “But I was pleasantly surprised by the social connections I made.”
Training with Karen deepened their friendship, and Kirrilley met inspiring women from all walks of life through the Couch To Mountain program. “Everyone had their own ‘why’ for being there,” she says. “Women holding space for other women’s stories and championing each other along the journey was an amazing collective to be a part of.”
Evenings spent sharing stories, laughter, and tears around the dinner table became cherished moments, as were the hours connecting with the other women on the trail. “To be part of something that was for myself, but also much bigger than myself, was very special,” Kirrilley adds.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of Kirrilley’s motivations was to set an example for her daughter. “I wanted to show my little girl that it’s important for women to not only look after others but also themselves,” she says. “I wanted her to see that girls and women can do hard things.”
Kirrilley’s journey didn’t just inspire her family; it also motivated her best friend Kylie to join the program. Together, they turned their hiking adventure into a fundraising effort, raising $5,270 for the Hunter Melanoma Foundation in memorial of loved ones lost to melanoma. “Our hike was in honour of Scott Polglase and Leanne McDermott,” she shares. “Forever young.”
Advice for Future Adventurers
Kirrilley’s advice to anyone considering joining Women’s Fitness Adventures is simple: “Feel the fear and do it anyway. Get busy living or get busy dying, as the saying goes!”
She also encourages women to embrace their unique journeys. “Don’t compare yourself to others. The people at the front of the pack have the same thoughts, fears, and insecurities as those at the back. No one is ever left behind,” she emphasises. “Laugh at yourself, enjoy the process, and trust the amazing leaders. They’ve got your back from the Couch, to the Mountain, and back again.”
Why Women’s Fitness Adventures?

- Women who want to fill their own cup while filling the cups of others.
Her journey is a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone, embracing community, and prioritising self-care. As Kirrilley’s story shows, sometimes saying “yes” to adventure can lead to the most unexpected and rewarding transformations.
