Finding Friendship on the Trail

Finding Friendship on the Trail

Nerida joined Women’s Fitness Adventures with some personal goals in mind: get fit, lose weight, and discover if she was a hiker (happily, she is!). She knew stepping out of her bubble would have a positive effect on her physical and mental health, but what she didn’t expect was the instant community she would be blessed with.

“I’ve talked more and met more people in the past year than the last 10 years!

Hiking with the ladies has led to some lovely coffee catch ups on Mondays after Hikeabout and I find myself enjoying hearing about their travels and stories. Lots of different ladies just living their best lives is so wonderful to share.”

The first time Nerida met Yasmin, there was an immediate connection.

They were both booked on to the Mount Edwards hike, so to save Yasmin the early morning drive to the hike, Nerida invited her to share an Airbnb she booked the night before. They bonded over Indian food and their shared love of cooking. Nerida found Yasmin to have a kind nature, and openness that makes her easy to talk to, and her intelligence and encouraging attitude was legendary.

Both Nerida and Yasmin are currently training for the epic Larapinta Trail, with their husbands as support crew and hiking companions. They have completed and signed onto yet more Multi Day hikes together, which makes the training extra fun as well as giving them more opportunities to hike together towards their common goal.

Nerida says that diving straight into the deep end gave her the confidence that she can achieve anything she sets out to do.

“I would advise people who are stuck on the couch and don’t feel they are very social that Women’s Fitness Adventures is a great place to just try out a hike and have a chat. Because you’re walking (and puffing) it isn’t an overwhelming social situation, and very easy to get to know people at your own pace.”

The hiking challenges became easier the more she walked and now she feels stronger both physically and mentally. Not only is she meeting her personal goals, she has found a support crew and treasured friendships to enrich her life.
