The Mighty Murray River Fitness Adventure: Magic in May 2024

The Mighty Murray Fitness Adventure May 2024

The Mighty Murray River is the lifeblood of South Australia.  It sustains plants and animals, communities and industries, legends and lore. For Women’s Fitness Adventures, it is a sacred place of connection and laughter that we love so much, there are two separate Adventures there this year.

As the first Mighty Murray Fitness Adventure of 2024, the May CREW spent three days exploring the banks of the meandering river, while enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, unique scenery, and all the hidden treasures this distinctly Australian destination has to offer.

There was so much to learn from the local guides about the complex river systems and the huge variety of birdlife on display – have you ever seen emus swimming!? The relaxed walking pace meant the CREW could immerse themselves in the experience, appreciating all the flora from the mighty 600 year old River Gums to the tiny Silver Daisy-Bush.

A private houseboat was our ‘home’ on the river, and came complete with comfortable lounges, cosy beds, a soothing spa, and even a private chef preparing scrumptious 3 course meals every night! Even better, the ingredients were all locally sourced and paired with outstanding South Australian wines. The dinner table was a place for story telling, getting to know each other and lots of laughter. This kind of dining experience fuels both the body and soul.

One of the many highlights of the adventure was the early morning walk to a lookout in time to watch the sunrise over the river, illuminating the red cliffs and listening to the river come to life. Taking time to enjoy the peace and the quiet and fully immerse ourselves in the sounds of the river awakening is a deeply special experience.

In the calm of the evening, the CREW shared stories while roasting marshmallows on a fire beside the river, watching the moon rise over the cliffs and marvelling at the reflections and colours of the Murray landscape in the late afternoon.

The Murray magic is hard to capture in words and pictures, and is best experienced on foot with new friends. The Mighty Murray Fitness Adventure was the perfect introduction to Multi Day Hiking for first-time Adventurers, and a wonderful wellness escape for all.
