Making New Friendships

How we met at Women's Fitness Adventures

The adventures of Lucy, Helen and Merlene

Although we never lived too far from one another our interests would never have brought us together. Often all it takes to meet someone new is to try something a little different and be open to new friendships and adventures.

We all joined Women’s Fitness Adventures at different times, yet we were all wanting the same – to get outdoors and step out of our comfort zones, meet new people, participate in great adventures and most importantly enjoy life.

Life is different when the kids leave home and perhaps it’s harder. We all seem to lead busy lives and friendships can take time to develop and that is why Women’s Fitness Adventures was the perfect solution.

The friends we have met have been “hand picked ” rather than friends because our children were friendly. As a consequence we have much more in common with each other than friends who are the parents of our ‘children’s friends’.

Even though the three of us had been on a few single day adventures together it wasn’t until September 2016 that our friendship really formed. Through Women’s Fitness Adventures we all headed off for a week to hike part of the Heysen Trail in South Australia.

During the course of that week, as we hiked our way through the spectacular Flinders Ranges we quickly realized that although our personalities were very different we had a lot more in common than was originally obvious.

The adventure cemented the bond, as we relied on each other for support as we climbed mountains, hiked trails, crossed streams and shared dinners around the “family” table. The immersion in the adventure allowed us to experience each others’ strengths, fears, hopes and dreams, all in the non judgemental company of women from all walks of life, so we felt safe to be ourselves.

Support for how we met

We were drawn to one another because we all saw traits in the others that we found appealing, complemented our own nature and bought out the best in us. We help each other become more rounded, fitter and confident.

Since then we have done a number of adventures together both single day and multi day, we’ve gone to dinner with our partners and see each other outside of Women’s Fitness Adventures.

Merlene is a Foundation member having joined in 2014 and has completed many adventures in that time.
