Why Hiking is the Best Way to Experience Iceland

Iceland has gained popularity for its stunning landscapes and photogenic spots, but the true beauty of the country comes alive when you go hiking. If you’ve ever considered visiting Iceland, don’t miss the chance to explore its trails—start planning your trip for the coming year.

Iceland: A Unique Blend of Fire and Ice

In Iceland, you’ll find a land where fire and ice coexist in a remarkable balance. During our hiking journey, we experienced firsthand the country’s stark yet beautiful landscapes, from geysers to glaciers, all under the mystical Midnight Sun.

Kick-off in Reykjavik: More Than Just a Starting Point

Our adventure began in Reykjavik, a bustling city filled with excellent bakeries, striking architecture, and a wide array of activities. Many in our group took day trips to experience the quintessential Icelandic attractions, such as puffin watching, volcano tours, and island circumnavigation.

The Perks and Peculiarities of the Midnight Sun

Our welcome dinner in Reykjavik was a delightful introduction to Icelandic cuisine. One unique aspect of spending summer in Iceland is the near-constant daylight. While unusual at first, this extended daylight became an advantage for our hiking expeditions, removing the urgency to reach our overnight huts before dark.

Setting Off: Early Morning Departure and Trailhead Activities

After packing our essentials, we took an early morning bus to the trailhead. Upon arrival, we had lunch and even had time for a relaxing soak in a thermal river, setting the stage for the incredible journey ahead.

Hiking Through Iceland’s Natural Wonders

The three-day hike led us through an awe-inspiring range of natural phenomena. Geysers, boiling water pools, and volcanic mud paths were just some of the highlights. We even donned scuba booties and water shoes to traverse icy rivers fed by glaciers.

The Laughter and Challenges of River Crossings

One memorable aspect of our hike was the frequent river crossings. The experience, requiring us to remove our trousers to wade through the water, was both challenging and entertaining, leaving us eager for more such adventures.

The Conclusion of the Laugavegar Trail

Our hike ended at Basar, marking the completion of the Laugavegar Trail. We spent two nights in a snug cabin, complete with indoor toilets and showers for everyone. The stay was made special by a birthday celebration, featuring cake and even candles.

Descending into Civilization and Saying Goodbye

Our final hiking day involved a descent through breathtaking gorges and waterfalls. Eventually, we reached a famous waterfall crowded with tourists, signifying our return to civilization. The day ended with a celebratory drink and a splash in the waterfall’s mist.

The Northern Lights Inn and the Blue Lagoon: A Perfect Ending

We wrapped up our adventure at the Northern Lights Inn, where we enjoyed the luxury of showers and fresh clothes from our stored luggage. The next day, we visited the Blue Lagoon for a rejuvenating dip in its geothermal pools.

Final Thoughts: The Lasting Impact of the Adventure

Our hiking trip in Iceland left us with unforgettable memories, a deeper appreciation for nature’s power, and valuable hiking skills. The land of fire and ice provided an unmatched backdrop for our journey, making it a must-visit destination for any adventure enthusiast. Thank you to all the ladies who embraced this challenge and revelled in all that Iceland had to offer. Skal, ladies!
