After lunch at Landmannalauger we hit the trail, hiking south into the mountains. We hike past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges.

Yet another volcano to inspire – this time we hike past the ancient and verdurous volcano – the Hattfell before venturing to Emstrur where farmers used to graze their sheep in Summer.

With one last jaw dropping vista before the hut, we visit the magnificent canyon of Markarfljot – cut down almost 200m into the rocks at Hattfell.

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Monday 8th July 2024

Porsmork – Fimmvorouhals

After breakfast and a gear shuffle, we turn our minds to the final and even more beautiful section of the hike.

As our hut tonight is difficult to access by support vehicle, we send our extra luggage back to Reykjavik by private transport.

Our packs are a little heavier for this section as we carry our sleeping bag, food, clothing and toiletries for the night. (around 10kg). The goal is to travel lightly and we will assist you through this.

But today is oh so picturesque –  filled with flowers, volcanoes and lava.

Setting off today we cross the river Krossa on a footbridge to enter the magical landscapes of Gooalond – the abode of the Gods.

Nesting at the foot of two glaciers this is a wonderland of ridges and cliffs, covered by a multitude of flowers and grasses.

We continue up through the hills leading to the pass of Fimmvorouhals, walking along the Kattarhryggir ridges with views to the impressive mountain of Utigonguhofoi up to Morinsheior heath.

At the end of the plateau we enjoy a view of the lava stream that flowed down form the volcano in 2010.

We cross brand new lava at the foot of magnificent red craters and view the lava and craters from a hill on the other side. Soon we cross  the neves of the high pass of Fimmvorouhals to get to our hut between two glaciers.

Hiking Distance: 12-14km

Hiking time: Approx. 6-7 hours

After a night between the glaciers we head down to Skogar.

At first, the path takes us over a desolate heath and past an old hut that offers limited shelter.

As we come alongside the river Skogaa, we follow it along, exploring the many hidden gorges and waterfalls, all the way to the famous Skogafoss waterfall. The scenery here is  spectacular.

We call it Waterfall Way.

Our multi day hikes are transformational. Some kind of “magic” happens with the group.

Here is what Margaret had to say about her Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure.

Margaret shares her Women's Fitness Adventures Iceland memories

Our Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure is a demanding hike and is graded as CHALLENGING

Prerequisite – you must have either participated on a Women’s Fitness Adventures Multi Day Hike before OR demonstrate that you have a completed a multi day hike somewhere else.

It requires a high level of fitness due to the varied terrain, weather conditions, the duration of each days hike and the ability to back up day after day.

Specifically:

  • Each day we hike a minimum of 12- 17km over uneven terrain. Sometimes longer. You MUST be able to back up with full day hikes for each and every day of the trail. There is no option for a rest day to wait for the group to return.
  • There are steep ascents & descents (up to 1000m each day) which require exceptional lower body strength.
  • The terrain is varied & includes soft volcanic ash, mud, snow, water, hard or rocky surfaces. You need balance, stability & mobility.
  • At times you will be required to “ford” rivers (with appropriate instruction & support given) by removing shoes & some clothing to avoid getting wet. This requires mental stamina.
  • You must be able to hike when your sleep may not have been ideal (as a result of shared dorm accommodation)
  • A strong level of cardio fitness is required – to ensure you can keep pace with the group on ascents & descents. This requires you are skilled in descents & can hike at the group pace. For ascents, you need to be able to hike continuously uphill without stopping.
  • You must have the strength & stamina to carry an 8-12 kg pack for 7 days. And a 12kg pack for 2 days.

Adventure Grading Challenging

Our Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure is graded Challenging.

The hiking is challenging with daily hikes ranging from 10-17km over varied surfaces and terrain.

One of the most common asked questions is ” Will I be fit enough?”

As soon as you book your Multi Day Adventure, you can get started with training.

Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, and whatever your fitness level, provided you put in the training, you will be successful.

Here’s what you get:

  • A Specialised Adventure Training program that will build strength and flexibility.
  • SIX months BEFORE departure you will receive a hike training plan relevant to your Iceland Adventure and, if followed properly, will ensure that you are Adventure Ready.
  • There will be ONLINE Group Adventure meetings that detail your training, gear & equipment and checks in on your status.
  • Access to the closed Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure Facebook Group.

By following (that is “doing”) our training programs and actively moving “toward” your adventure you will become Adventure Ready.

The training programs have been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on many decades of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will only need day packs to carry your water and snacks for the day.  You will also have personal items that you MUST carry along such as extra socks and wet weather gear and sunscreen. The weight of your pack should average around 8kg.

For the final two days of the hike, we have no vehicle support, so you are required to carry your sleeping bag, light change of clothes, limited toiletries and your share of food. The weight of your pack should be no more than 12kg.

A comprehensive gear list will be supplied to you long before the adventure so that you can feel confident that you have the right gear.

Within a few weeks of your booking being confirmed, you will have access to your Gear and Packing list. By sticking to the list, you will be well prepared for the Ultimate Iceland Adventure.

Fitness Table Challenging Adventures

If you are unsure as to your current fitness level please use this handy resource: How to find your hiking fitness level

July is the warmest month in Iceland, with average temperatures of 10-15 degrees.  However most days in the highlands will be well below this – think 0-6 degrees.

The weather can often change quickly, with warm air coming from the Caribbean on the Gulf Stream and Arctic air coming in from the north. A bit like 4 seasons in one day. Be prepared for rain and wind. Wind gusts can be strong and come in suddenly.

There is also no darkness in July which means there is no rush to reach the hut by a certain time. Sleeping is not a problem because we are tired from the days hiking.

It is important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. Weather can be unpredictable.

In the event of extreme weather conditions, the adventure may vary from the itinerary. Please be aware of this and accept this as part of the adventure. Your personal safety is our highest priority.

Our fabulous adventures allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime. At Women’s Fitness Adventures we are also committed to sustainable adventures so that the places and spaces we go will also last well beyond our lifetime and the many generations to follow. Sustainability starts when you join our community and never ends.

We are committed to the principles of minimal impact, leave no trace, tread lightly  and give back to the local community. Here’s how we do that for all of our adventures (short and long)

Consumables

  • We encourage “no plastics” so bringing refillable water bottles, reusable cups and cutlery where applicable and using lunchboxes where plastic can be minimised
  • It’s a leave no trace principle, so all food scraps, toilet waste and rubbish items are carried out. (See our Masterclass on Toileting for the Trail)
  • We are committed to reducing paper waste inside our organisation and have implemented a paperless booking system.

Transport

  • For this adventure, once in country, we use either foot or public transport as our mode of movement.
  • When flying, we encourage you to offset your emissions by purchasing carbon offsets.

Minimal impact

  • We have a “tread lightly” policy where we stay on known tracks and paths, minimising our impact to bush, plants and wildlife.
  • Before we embark on an adventure or trail, we brief you on the flora, fauna and any other considerations that form the uniqueness of the environment so that you understand and appreciate the minimal impact approach.

Accommodation & Adventure Partners

  • Where possible we partner with Eco Certified businesses who follow the same eco philosophies
  • Our adventures have all the applicable National Park permits and licenses to operate (or International equivalents)
  • Our “give back” policy also applies to the locations we stay – choosing local operators, businesses and townships where funds spent go directly to small business owners – doing our part to create sustainable communities.
