New Zealand North Island: An Adventure of Beauty and Bonding – November 2024

When you embark on a New Zealand hiking adventure, there are three things you can count on: stunning natural beauty, wildly diverse landscapes, and ever-changing weather.

Our North Island Fitness Adventure delivered all this and more, combining breathtaking hikes with unforgettable experiences that brought us closer together as a group. From Auckland’s lively wharf to the alpine ridgelines of Tongariro, every step of the journey offered new discoveries and a whole lot of fun for the Women’s Fitness Adventures CREW!

Kicking Off in Auckland

Our hiking adventure began in Auckland, where we gathered for a welcome dinner at the vibrant wharf. Excitement buzzed in the air as we reconnected with old friends and met new ones. This dinner was more than just a meal—it marked the start of a shared journey of exploration, laughter, and camaraderie that would carry us through the trails ahead.

Lake Tarawera’s Hidden Hiking Treasure

The first hike took us to the serene shores of Lake Tarawera. A quick boat ride delivered us to a remote spot where the adventure began. Hiking along the lakeside trail, we were treated to stunning views of the calm waters and lush greenery. The highlight? A geothermal hot pool hidden beside the lake. Soaking in the natural warmth, surrounded by pristine wilderness, was a moment of pure relaxation. Afterward, we hiked back through native New Zealand bushland before capping off the day with a lively dinner at Rotorua’s charming Fainting Goat restaurant.

Whirinaki Forest: Wilderness Hiking and Hut Life

The next leg of our hiking journey took us deeper into nature. We paused at the Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland to marvel at bubbling mud pools and vibrant geothermal features before entering Whirinaki Forest. With backpacks loaded for an overnight stay, we hiked through ancient, towering trees and alongside a tranquil river. Along the way, we spotted native wildlife, including blue ducks and deer. Some of us pitched tents by the river, while others stayed in the Whirinaki Hut, falling asleep to the sounds of the forest.

The Power of Huka Falls

An early start brought us to the thundering beauty of Huka Falls, where the vibrant blue hues of the water captivated us. After hiking along the river to the falls, we wrapped up the day with a cosy BBQ dinner, sharing laughter, stories, and new inside jokes with our hiking companions.

Alpine Challenges in Tongariro National Park

Our most ambitious hike awaited us in Tongariro National Park. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing promised stunning views and challenging terrain. Starting in sunshine, we trekked into rugged alpine landscapes, layering up as the temperatures dropped. However, strong 70 km/h winds forced us to turn back for safety before reaching the summit. This experience reminded us of the unpredictable nature of mountain hiking and the importance of preparation. Back at our hotel, we celebrated our safe return with warm showers and well-earned drinks.

Before returning to Auckland, we explored the mystical Waitomo Caves. As we wandered through the underground labyrinth, we were enchanted by the glowing constellations of tiny glowworms dotting the cave walls. This surreal experience felt like stepping into another world, leaving us in awe of nature’s wonders.

A Celebration of Connection and Adventure

Our hiking adventure concluded in Auckland with a traditional Celebration Dinner and Awards Ceremony. We laughed, reminisced about our favourite moments, and honoured the friendships formed on the trails. This journey was more than just a fitness trip; it was a celebration of connection, growth, and discovery.
