I’d always been an active if not exceptionally sporty person but had become a little bored with my normal activities and was very keen to broaden my horizons.
Bush walking had always interested me but because my husband is not really that into it, I’d never really had the courage or inclination to go climb a mountain by myself.
In February 2015 a friend of mine posted a photo of herself on Facebook with other ladies on the top of Mt Maroon. Despite the weather, which was very wet and cold they all sported broad smiles and looked like they’d had the best day ever.
One look at that photo and I immediately investigated the Women’s Fitness Adventures website and booked myself into a walk two weeks later. From the moment I met the other ladies instantly felt like this group was made for me, everyone was really friendly and seemed to be genuinely interested in what my life was like.
I had a terrific day and as soon as I arrived home that night I joined and became a member.
I still think that decision was one of my best ones ever.
Part of the experience for me is also the cameraderie, companionship and social aspect. The wonderful women I’ve met and the places I’ve been since joining have absolutely rounded out my life beautifully and I couldn’t be more pleased that I saw that photo on Facebook in 2015.
Interestingly enough my biggest achievement since joining is probably not a physical one but rather a self development one.
Whilst I’m far from being shy, I’m never the life and soul of the party, my late sister in law once described me, quite accurately, as an extroverted introvert.
Pretty much without exception before joining Women’s Fitness Adventures most of my friends I had known for over 25 years.
What I’ve achieved since joining Women’s Fitness Adventures is learning how to open up to new possibilities with regard to new friendships and possibilities and I’m very pleased to say that I have new friends who I’ve only known since joining.
Sure, life can be busy but in order to be the best person you can be I honestly believe that it’s important to spend some time ‘being selfish’ and doing things for you.
A cancer diagnosis in 2015 and subsequent treatment only reinforced the importance of doing things just for you, after all we never know what is around the corner.
I know that my adventures have made me a more interesting and rounded person.
I’m secretly rather chuffed and proud of myself that I’m in pretty good physical shape and am confident enough to try things I never thought possible. In a nutshell exercise and participating in adventures just make me feel good about myself
There are many excuses for not joining: I’m not fit enough, I don’t know anyone, I’m too busy, I’m too shy.
My advice is don’t overthink your decision, bite the bullet and join, I guarantee you won’t regret it and will be so glad you did.
Your life will be much enriched by the activities, supportiveness and friendships you’ll undoubtedly make.
