Description
NZ North Island & Tongariro Fitness Adventure
8 days – 7 nights
This adventure takes us through the North Island of New Zealand, from volcanic lakes to ancient rainforest to one of the best day hikes in the world.
We’re collected as a group from Auckland Airport and head south to Rotorua, our base for two nights. A morning water taxi gets us across Lake Tarawera, then we follow a well-formed trail along the lakeshore, an area layered with Maori and early European history. There are swimming spots along the way, and a natural hot river flowing out of the bush to soak in before we head back for dinner.
From Rotorua we pack our overnight gear and drive to the edge of Whirinaki Forest, a remnant of the ancient rainforest that once covered the supercontinent Gondwanaland more than 150 million years ago. The hike in descends gently through native beech forest to a hut on the Whirinaki River, where we cook dinner together and settle in for the night.
The next day’s hike takes us down the valley and out of the forest, past some of New Zealand’s tallest podocarp trees and with a good chance of spotting native robin, whio (rare blue duck) and kaka along the way. We stop at Huka Falls to feel the spray as the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest, plunges into the pool below, then continue on to Taupo for dinner before arriving at our lodge on the edge of Tongariro National Park for a three-night stay.
With two full days in the park, we have room to choose our best hiking day. One walk takes in the Silica Rapids, mineral-rich terraces formed over ancient lava, through alpine beech forest and tussock fields with views of Mount Ruapehu. The other is the full-day Tongariro Alpine Crossing, regarded as one of the best day walks in the world, climbing to around 1900m past Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes.
On our way back to Auckland we stop at Waitomo to descend into the famous Ruakuri Cave, where thousands of glowworms light the ceiling like a starlit sky, before a picnic lunch and the final drive north for our Awards Evening and Celebration Dinner.
This adventure is graded MODERATE. Average hiking is approx 5 hours a day, up to 8 -10 hours on Alpine Crossing day, with pack weights of 10-12.5kg on the overnight hike into the hut. We’re out all day regardless.

After leaving the forest, we visit Huka Falls and feel the spray as the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest, plunges into the pool below.

Here is what Janet had to say when asked what she liked best about Women’s Fitness Adventures
” The wonderful C.R.E.W members, so supportive, caring and interesting”
The days in New Zealand are outstanding with such a variety of landscapes on offer.
We have graded the adventure moderate due to:
- Consecutive days hiking with a minimum of 8kg in your day pack
- Two days carrying up to 15kg in your pack & staying overnight in a cosy, yet basic Conservation Hut
- Hiking trails that may have obstacles such as trees or rocks across the path & you need to scramble over
- The full day/20km Tongariro Crossing with variable weather conditions. Underfoot will consist of solid ash, scree and boardwalk at times.
A MODERATE or above level of fitness is required.
What this means is:
- There are consecutive days hiking where we are out “all day”, so having a good level of endurance (the ability to be out hiking all day) is necessary
- The hiking consists of hills, and paths that are uneven underfoot. You need good balance & stability.
- A good level of cardio fitness is required – so being able to recover your breath after hiking hills; hiking up hills/stairs without stopping.
- Strength in your legs is required so that you can handle the distance over time.
- You will need to keep an average pace of 4km/hour over each and every day for the duration of the hikes.

The NZ North Island Fitness Adventure is graded MODERATE.
The hiking is moderate with daily hikes ranging from 10 – 20km
The terrain is undulating and it continually is either ascending or descending.
One of the most common asked questions is “Will I be fit enough?”
As soon as you book into the NZ North Island Fitness Adventure you can get started with training.
Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with a current introductory plus level of fitness will find this an achievable goal – provided you put in the training.
Here’s what you get:
- A 14 week hike training plan relevant to your adventure.
- A structured ONLINE Adventure Meeting that covers fitness motivation, gear & equipment, logistics and more. AND introduces you to the rest of the group.
- Access to the closed NZ North Island Fitness Adventure Facebook Group – which provides your fitness accountability.
Your ONLINE training program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.
By following (that is “doing”) our training programs and actively moving “toward” your adventure you will become Adventure Ready.

Testimonials
“Oh, it’s a hard question, as everything was very very good. Maybe the natural hot spring bath that we had right at the beginning?
I also thoroughly enjoyed the companionship of the people in the group. I think that’s the best part.
I took a lot of things you have done for us for granted, because I was flat out just keep walking on some days, but your hard work enabled us to indulge ourselves to concentrate on “us”. Thank you so much.” Fumi
“The variety of NZ experiences – we learned a lot of the history, geology and biology of this area. The wonderful company of like-minded women. Everyone was well prepared and got on with one another easily. The thoughtfulness and generosity of Jane our crew leader. Positive interactions with local people”. Ann.
