After breakfast and a gear shuffle, we turn our minds to the final and even more beautiful section of the hike.
As our hut tonight is difficult to access by support vehicle, we send our extra luggage back to Reykjavik by private transport.
Our packs are a little heavier for this section as we carry our sleeping bag, food, clothing and toiletries for the night. The goal is to travel lightly and we will assist you through this.
But today is oh so picturesque – filled with flowers, volcanoes and lava.
Setting off today we cross the river Krossa on a footbridge to enter the magical landscapes of Gooalond – the abode of the Gods.
Nesting at the foot of two glaciers this is a wonderland of ridges and cliffs, covered by a multitude of flowers and grasses.
We continue up through the hills leading to the pass of Fimmvorouhals, walking along the Kattarhryggir ridges with views to the impressive mountain of Utigonguhofoi up to Morinsheior heath. At the end of the plateau we enjoy a view of the lava stream that flowed down form the volcano in 2010.
We cross brand new lava at the foot of magnificent red craters and view the lava and craters from a hill on the other side, before crossing the neves of the high pass of Fimmvorouhals to get to our hut between two glaciers.

We call it Waterfall Way.
We arrive into Skogafoss before a bus transfer to Reykjavik and our hotel near the Blue Lagoon.

ADVENTURE TYPE & GRADING
Our Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure is a demanding hike and is graded as CHALLENGING. It requires a high level of fitness due to the varied terrain, weather conditions, the duration of each days hike and the ability to back up day after day.
Specifically:
- Each day we hike a minimum of 12km over uneven terrain
- You are required to back up day after day as there is no option for a rest day to wait for the group to return. It is a continuous hike, meaning we only stay in one location for one night.
- There are ascents and descents which require good lower body strength. Ascents & descents can be as much as 100o metres in one day.
- The terrain is varied and may include soft volcanic ash, mud, snow, water, hard or rocky surfaces.
- At times you will be required to “ford” rivers (with appropriate instruction & support given) by removing shoes and some clothing to avoid getting wet
- As you are sleeping in a different shared mountain hut each night, you may not get the sleep you are used to, which can impact on your fitness level.
- There are consecutive days hiking where we are out “all day”, so having a good level of endurance (the ability to be out hiking all day) is necessary
- A strong level of cardio fitness is required – so being able to recover your breath after hiking hills; hiking up hills/stairs without stopping every few moments (the goal is to keep going no matter how slow you might think you are).
- Stability on legs is required so that you can handle the uneven terrain
- You must have the strength and stamina to carry an 8-12 kg pack for 7 days.
-
FITNESS TRAINING
Our Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure is graded Challenging.
The hiking is challenging with daily hikes ranging from 10-17km over varied surfaces and terrain.
One of the most common asked questions is ” Will I be fit enough?”
As soon as you book your Multi Day Adventure, you can get started with training.
Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, and whatever your fitness level, provided you put in the training, you will be successful.
Here’s what you get:
- A Specialised Adventure Training program that will build strength and flexibility. This will start within a month of you joining the adventure.
- SIX months BEFORE departure you will receive hike training plan relevant to your Iceland Adventure and, if followed, will ensure that you are Adventure Ready.
- There will be several ONLINE Group Adventure meetings that detail your training, gear & equipment and checks in on your status.
- Access to the closed Ultimate Iceland Fitness Adventure Facebook Group.
In person Group Hike Training is also available and is an optional extra for participants based in South East Queensland. The link to purchase the sessions will be made available to you once your booking is confirmed.
These training sessions are held in Brisbane once a month on a Sunday and are shared with members booked on a variety of our multi day adventures.
By following (that is “doing”) our training programs and actively moving “toward” your adventure you will become Adventure Ready.
The training programs have been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on many decades of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.

Weather
July is the warmest month in Iceland, with average temperatures of 10-15 degrees. However most days in the highlands will be well below this – think 0-6 degrees.
The weather can often change quickly, with warm air coming from the Caribbean on the Gulf Stream and Arctic air coming in from the north. A bit like 4 seasons in one day. Be prepared for rain and wind. Wind gusts can be strong and come in suddenly.
There is also no darkness in July which means there is no rush to reach the hut by a certain time. Sleeping is not a problem because we are tired from the days hiking.
It is important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. Weather can be unpredictable.
In the event of extreme weather conditions, the adventure may vary from the itinerary. Please be aware of this and accept this as part of the adventure. Your personal safety is our highest priority.
