The Outback Queensland Fitness Adventure
A hiking adventure in the west – the Carnarvon Ranges and Expedition National Park
5 days, 4 nights
Come with us on a very personalised hiking adventure into the spectacular Carnarvon Ranges and Sandstone Ranges. A chance to immerse yourself in Queensland’s rugged beauty while connecting with women who share your love of challenge, fun, and the outdoors.
This introductory plus – moderate graded adventure combines hiking on “unformed trails,” sandstone ridges, and diverse vegetation areas with a mix of motel accommodation and super glamping under the stars. Best of all, this is a day-pack only hike, so you’ll carry just the essentials.
Fitness & Preparation
This adventure is graded Introductory Plus to Moderate. That means you’ll need to be:
- Comfortable walking 8 -15km a day on uneven ground with some hills and stairs
- Able to carry a day pack of up to 7kg with your personal requirements, including water
- Prepared for uneven paths at times with occasional stepping over rocks or tree roots
- Ready for consecutive days of hiking, often out all day
- Capable of maintaining an average pace of around 4km per hour over the terrain
As part of your booking, you’ll receive a training plan written specifically for this adventure. This will guide you step by step in building the endurance, strength, and confidence you’ll need.
If you’re also a Women’s Fitness Adventures Member, your preparation goes even further. You have access to weekly live and on-demand hiking fitness sessions (Step Fit, Trail Fit), Hiking Masterclasses and an online community to keep you accountable and connected.
Membership Note
If you’re already a Women’s Fitness Adventures Member, remember to LOG IN to access your special member rate. Not a member yet? Membership gives you more than savings. It’s the complete preparation and support package:
- Your adventure-specific training plan is included once you book (member or not).
- As a member, you’ll also have free access to all Step Fit, Trail Fit and Masterclasses to help you prepare, plus connection with fellow adventurers before departure.
- Non-members can pay per session for fitness classes, but most women find membership far better value.
Many women say joining membership before their first adventure gave them both the preparation and the friendships that made the whole experience unforgettable.

Our multi day hikes are transformational. Some kind of “magic” happens with the group.
Here is what our members had to say…
“Hiking off the trail was the highlight for me. Hiking in areas with NO other people. Just us, clear skies and beautiful countryside” Linda
Learning so much about the area, seeing spectacular scenery and learning so much about local history, environment and community. So well organised” Dianne
“Nice balance of spectacular tourist sites and the unique experience of hiking off grid and having magnificent views to ourselves.” Debby
This is a INTRODUCTORY PLUS – MODERATE multi day adventure.
Some of the trails are well marked and traversed and others are “off track” through bush scrub.
Off track means:
- that there is no trail
- it will be uneven and rocky underfoot, due to the nature of it being outdoors and natural.
There are some ascents where you will get out of breath however you will take these at the pace of the group
With descents you will need to concentrate due to the unevenness of the trail.
With the right commitment to hike training, this is suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness.
An INTRODUCTORY PLUS – MODERATE level of fitness FOR THIS ADVENTURE means:
- Whether we are hiking or not, we are out “all day”, so having a good level of endurance (the ability to be out hiking all day) is necessary
- The hiking consists of hills, stairs and uneven paths and some off track sections.
- A moderate level of cardio fitness is required – so being able to recover your breath after hiking hills; hiking up hills/stairs without stopping every few moments (the goal is to keep going no matter how slow you might think you are).
- Stability on legs is required so that you can handle the uneven terrain.
- The ability to carry a pack of up to 7kg with all of your personal requirements, including water, over the trails.

Our Outback Queensland Fitness Adventure is graded Introductory Plus – Moderate.
The hiking is introductory plus – moderate with daily hikes ranging from 9-20km
The terrain is undulating and we are regularly ‘off track’.
One of the most common asked questions is “Will I be fit enough?”
As soon as you book into the Outback Queensland Fitness Adventure you can get started with training.
Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with a current introductory level of fitness will find this an achievable goal – provided you put in the training.
Here’s what you get:
- A 12 week hike training plan relevant to your adventure.
- An ONLINE Group Adventure meeting that details your training, gear & equipment and checks in on your status.
- Access to the closed Outback Queensland Fitness Adventure Facebook Group – which provides your fitness accountability.
The training program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.
By following (that is “doing”) our training programs and actively moving “toward” your adventure you will become Adventure Ready.

As much as we would like to, we have no control over the weather.
Daytime temperatures will vary from low teens to mid twenties. Night time temperatures may get cold under the clear Winter night skies.
That’s why it’s important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather.
It is very important you bring the right gear for the conditions.
As it is an inland region in Queensland, temperatures can warm up and storms can pop up. In fact, the Carnarvon Gorge creates its own weather system.

Our fabulous adventures allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime. At Women’s Fitness Adventures we are also committed to sustainable adventures so that the places and spaces we go will also last well beyond our lifetime and the many generations to follow. Sustainability starts when you join our community and never ends.
We are committed to the principles of minimal impact, leave no trace, tread lightly and give back to the local community. Here’s how we do that for all of our adventures (short and long)
Consumables
- We encourage “no plastics” so bringing refillable water bottles, reusable cups and cutlery where applicable and using lunchboxes where plastic can be minimised
- It’s a leave no trace principle, so all food scraps, toilet waste and rubbish items are carried out. (See our Masterclass on Toileting for the Trail)
- We are committed to reducing paper waste inside our organisation and have implemented a paperless booking system.
Transport
- For this adventure, once in country, we use either foot or public transport as our mode of movement.
- When flying, we encourage you to offset your emissions by purchasing carbon offsets.
Minimal impact
- We have a “tread lightly” policy where we stay on known tracks and paths, minimising our impact to bush, plants and wildlife.
- Before we embark on an adventure or trail, we brief you on the flora, fauna and any other considerations that form the uniqueness of the environment so that you understand and appreciate the minimal impact approach.
Accommodation & Adventure Partners
- Where possible we partner with Eco Certified businesses who follow the same eco philosophies
- Our adventures have all the applicable National Park permits and licenses to operate (or International equivalents)
- Our “give back” policy also applies to the locations we stay – choosing local operators, businesses and townships where funds spent go directly to small business owners – doing our part to create sustainable communities.
