The Crete Canyons, Coast & Mountains Fitness Adventure
10 days – 9 nights
From the shimmering blue of the Libyan Sea to the rugged peaks of the White Mountains, this is Crete at its finest, experienced on foot, from the inside out.
We hike the iconic Samaria and Imbros Gorges, along with lesser-known trails that reveal the wild beauty of the island. Expect a mix of rocky paths, mountain tracks and coastal routes, sometimes with scree underfoot and the occasional drop-off as we wind through the gorges. It’s dramatic, it’s breathtaking, and it’s all part of the adventure.
Along the way, we stay in charming family-run hotels, where the welcome is as warm as the sunshine and the food is full of flavour. Travel is a mix of hiking, private vehicle transfers, and even water taxis from remote villages only accessible by sea – giving us a truly unique perspective on this captivating island.
This adventure is graded Moderate to Moderate Plus. Please scroll down for full details on our Adventure Grading and Fitness Level guidelines.

Tour Plan
Monday 7th September 2026
Arrive Chania, Crete.
If you’re travelling with your CREW leader, our local hiking guide will meet us on arrival for our private transfer to the hotel.
Depending on your flight arrival time there may be time to explore the old Venetian Port, the market, the dockyards and the ancient narrow, cobbled streets.
Late in the afternoon we gather for pre dinner drinks – toasting a welcome to the team, followed by an adventure briefing for our hiking adventure that follows.
Tonight we enjoy our first of many Greek dinners – this one our Welcome Dinner. It’s time to get to know each other a little more AND share the excitement of coming days.
Accommodation: Town Hotel, Twin share.
Meals: Dinner

Tuesday 8th September 2026
Sougia – Omalos
After breakfast this morning we take a private transfer to the small coastal town of Sougia, located on the Southwest Coast.
Our hike starts in the short, yet impressive gorge of Selinou before heading up and over to the ancient bay of Lissos. We visit the temple of Asklepios along the way.
After a picnic lunch on the trail, we return via a different path offering beautiful views down to Sougia and completing a “round walk” or circuit as we know it.
On arrival in Sougia there’s the chance for a well earned swim in the clear ocean waters.
Later in the afternoon we take our private transfer to our hotel in the mountain plain of Omalos.

Samaria Gorge – Agia Roumeli
There are so many gorges on Crete and our hike today takes in the most well known – Samaria Gorge. It’s located in the heart of Samaria National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which is also home to numerous endemic species of plants and animals.
With it’s breathtaking scale and impressive topography, the grandeur of the hike will leave an impression.

Today is a day to maximise our location.
You can relax by the sea along the village’s long pebble beach, or take an optional hike this morning to the Tarra Fortress above the village.
After yesterday’s long downhill hike, this hike is less intense and offers stunning views into the gorge and across the Libyan Sea.
Returning to our village of Agia Roumeli there’s plenty of free time in the afternoon to rest, relax or swim. Or maybe it’s a long lunch!

Our trail gradually heads upwards into a pine forest before becoming steeper as we progress toward the Selouda balcony where the views from the top over the South Coast are amazing.
We continue hiking along the last part of the trail to the mountain village of Agios Ioannis, our home for the next two nights.

Agios Ioannis – Pachnes Peak
Today we hike to the roof of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), (note weather dependent).
The start of the hike can only be accessed by 4WD so its a bit of a bumpy start to the trail head, but well worth it. Our transfer is about 1.5 hours each way.
A well marked path up to the Pachnes and the views from the peak are stunning. The High Desert and the surrounding summits offer unique views to the North & South Coast of the island.
We return to our local Family Hotel tonight.

Aradena Gorge – Loutro
Today we leave Agios Ioannis and head toward the old village of Aradena.
We hike across the narrow bridge and down the paved zig zag path until we reach the dry river bed in the lesser known Aradena Gorge.
The impressive high gorge walls rise up as we follow the path to the sea, arriving at Marmara. There’s time for a swim.

Loutro
There’s an optional, relatively easy hike today from Loutro to the beach of Glyka Nera (Sweet Water).
Our trail follows a well marked, coastal path above the endless shades of blue sea and there’s opportunity to swim along the way.
There’s a taverna there for some lunch, looking over the sea. In the afternoon you can return the same way or catch an optional water taxi, back to Loutro.

Is this right for me?
This is a MODERATE multi-day adventure – with added challenge thanks to Crete’s rocky terrain.
-
Trails are rocky, often with scree, and may include some light scrambling and sections near edges and drop-offs.
-
You’ll need strong legs and stable ankles to hike multiple days over uneven ground with a 7kg daypack, especially downhill.
-
A moderate level of cardio fitness is important – the trails are long and varied.
-
Balance and mobility are essential – surfaces range from sand and gravel to rocky tracks.
-
If you have a fear of heights, some exposed sections may feel challenging – but rest assured, our experienced C.R.E.W Leaders will support and guide you through every step.
-
Mental focus and a positive mindset help too – the weather is likely to be warm, with limited shade at times.
-
If you have any physical concerns, please check in with your health professional before booking.
With the right preparation, this is a truly rewarding adventure – and we’re here to help you get Adventure Ready.
