The Cinque Terre Italian Fitness Adventure 14-25th May 2019

Situated on the Mediterranean in the north of Italy lie the sleepy seaside villages that is referred to as “The Cinque Terre”. A recently discovered hiking haven, the Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been since 1997. The name Cinque Terre means 5 (cinque) lands (terre), with origins dating back to the 11th Century.

It is a stunning collection of 5 villages on the hillside of a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. Paths, boats and trains connect the villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

With a region rich in history, it boasts some spectacular hiking trails carved into the mountainside, affording the most wonderful views of the Mediterranean. Stunning photo opportunities are around every corner of this superb coastline.

Join Women’s Fitness Adventures on this amazing adventure to this magical part of the world. We explore both the popular and not so well known hiking trails that criss cross through the mountainside. With a local hiking guide, we unlock history and hidden gems. After a day’s hiking we end each day in the relaxed village of Monterosso where the food and wine options are limitless.

At Volastra we experience and learn more about local wines and foods by visiting a local cantina for lunch.

After lunch we continue along the path as far as Manarola. Here there is free time to stroll the village. Depending on how your legs are feeling, there is the option to hike Via Beccara, the path to Romaggiore. Otherwise the option is to take the train to Riomaggiore and then back by train to our hotel in Monterosso.

Tonight join your fellow adventurers for dinner at a local seafood restaurant.

Accommodation: hotel, twin share

Hiking time: 3 to 5 hours (note this refers to hiking time only. Photo stops, village visits, rest stops and lunch/snack breaks are on top of hiking time)

Palmaria Island

This morning we meet our guide and travel by local train to LaSpezia. Here we take a stroll along the main street to the ferry terminal where we will then board a ferry to Palmaria Island. Upon disembarking, we hike the ring path to the other side of the island. There is plenty of time for a swim and lunch in a fisherman osteria.

In the afternoon we take the ferry across to Portovenere (UNESCO site) for a guided visit of the village, before catching the ferry back to our “home” in Monterosso.

Whilst not officially a town of the Cinque Terre, Portovenere is equally as beautiful and offers an array of cafes and eateries full of Italian delights (the pizza is very delicious)

Day 6 – Sunday 19th May 2019

Depending on our hiking pace, there may be free time for swimming.

After lunch, we take a ride to the gorgeous town of Portofino, allowing time for a visit back before heading back to Santa Margherita.  After a magical day out, we return by train to Monterosso.

This morning we meet our guide and hike out of Monterosso along the mule track that leads to the Sovoire Sanctuary located on top of the mountains overlooking the 5 Terre.

From here we continue along the ridge footpaths as far as the Sanctuary of Reggio, a real terrace over the 5 Terre and Vernazza.

Our hike takes us downhill as far as Vernazza where we have free time for lunch. It is worth a quick hike up to the lookout for stunning views of the 5 Terre.

After lunch there is the option to return to Monterosso on foot via the blue path or by train

Meals: Breakfast

Hiking time: 3.5-6 hours

Day 8 – Tuesday 21st May 2019

Your own time

Today is yours to do what you like. By now you will have discovered that there is so much to see and do in the Cinque Terre that the hardest task of the day will be making a decision. OR don’t make one at all and simply relax.

Some options may include exploring more trails, revisiting villages, a long, long lunch, swimming, cooking classes, art classes or for the more adventurous, a day trip to Florence or Pisa. The choice is yours.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 – Wednesday 22nd May 2019

The longest hike Riomaggiore to Portovenere

Meeting our guide this morning we travel by train to reach Riomaggiore where we start the mule track to Montenero Sactuary.  From here we hike to the village of Campiglia along the ridge where we enjoy a view on one side of the Mediterranean, and on the other side, the Gulf of Poets with La Spezia.

We lunch at the delightful town of Campiglia, with its spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

After lunch, we hike along the path to Portovenere. Our return journey to “home” is by boat to Monterosso.

As this is our final night of our Italian Fitness Adventure,  we have a Gala Dinner organised to celebrate our wonderful week. This will incorporate the tradition of our Awards Evening, which we always have on our multi day adventures.  This is certainly a night not to be missed. It is full of laughs, reflection on our memories of the week and a consolidation of the grand adventure we have had.

Day 10 – Thursday 23rd May 2019

It is a leisurely start for breakfast and some time for last minute shopping, photos or a short hike, as we travel back to Milan, to complete the circle of where the adventure began.

For those departing for home, we will catch the shuttle from Milan Central Station to the airport for our evening flight to Australia.

Training is included in the adventure price (see below).

In the unlikely event that you do not feel up to hiking one day, as all our hikes start and finish at our hotel, you do have the choice to not hike for that day.

Our Cinque Terre Italian Fitness Adventure  is a  moderate hike with plenty of hills and stairs, that requires a moderate-high level of fitness (graded moderate). We advise you do as much training as you can before the adventure.

The more you train for this adventure, the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world.

Training is included as part of this adventure. Please refer to the “Fitness and Training” tab for information regarding Group Hike Training and online training.

With plenty of advance notice of the adventure and time to train, hikers at beginner/intermediate level make this a manageable and rewarding fitness goal, provided you do the training.

Our guides

Our local guides are members of the Italian National Hiking Guides Association, have full insurance and carry a first aid kit.

It is important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. Overnight temperatures are generally in the mid teens. A packing list will be supplied once your booking is confirmed.

In the event of extreme weather conditions or track closures, the adventure may vary from the itinerary.  In the case of very rough sea the ferry rides can be replaced by the train or the itinerary modified. Please be aware of this and accept this as part of the adventure. Your personal safety is our highest priority.

Flights are not included in the cost of the adventure. Please do not book flights until you receive confirmation of your place and confirmation that the adventure is proceeding. This forms part of the Booking Terms and Conditions from Women’s Fitness Adventures.

You may wish to use frequent flyer points or arrive early/stay longer. Should you require any assistance booking a flight or other arrangements to extend your stay, we can put you in contact with our preferred travel partner once your booking is confirmed.

Other important notes

Our 10 day, 8 night Cinque Terre Italian Hiking Adventure is graded moderate and we advise you to do as much training as you can beforehand. It is also important to come along with an open mind ready for an amazing experience, whatever the weather and whoever the group.

Remember, this is Italy!  The Italians are very friendly and relaxed. It is important to note, that whilst we will endeavour to follow the itinerary as closely as possible, the relaxed manner of the Italian culture may mean some adjustments to the itinerary may have to be made. We suggest that you relax and go with the flow. Your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader will handle any difficulties should they arise.

Fitness and Training

We’ve got you covered with the Fitness and Training.

You may be thinking…

“I want to go, but can’t make time for training”

“I want to go but will I be fit enough?”

“I really want to be part of this but don’t know where to start”

One thing ALL of our past C.R.E.W. Adventurers have said is:
“do the training, follow the plan and you will LOVE your adventure even more”

Our training plans have been developed with YOU in mind, based on:

  • the latest research
  • 10 years of working with women in the health and fitness space, both as a Personal Trainer and a Certified Weight Loss coach
  • the cumulative effect of hundreds of kilometres and hours on the trails

  • feedback from our C.R.E.W Members.

All Group Hike Training options are perfect opportunities for you to:

  1. get to know fellow C.R.E.W members on your hike
  2. gauge your level of fitness
  3. boost your fitness
Feedback from our past adventurers identifies how important it is to them to participate in both online and offline training. Over 80% of our past adventurers stated that training was great for getting to know fellow adventurers.
Women's Fitness A
Lucy says, ” Hike training helps. You get to know your fellow hikers, – helps with comradeship and you tend to support one another on the adventure, especially if it is out of your comfort zone, ask questions on what gear to bring and find out more about the adventure”
Designed by women, for women, the benefits of our training plan spill over into everyday life and consist of the following components:
  • FUNCTIONAL – helping you strengthen the muscles that support the joints. This has benefits not only for your multi day hike, but for life in general.
  • CARDIO BOOSTING – designed to elevate the heart rate in a safe way, ensuring that every training session you do will make you better than the last one
  • ENDURANCE – nothing substitutes for time on your legs. So we have designed it that way – to work in with you and your lifestyle.

We also understand the physiology of women’s bodies, so rest assured our programs have truly been designed with YOU at the very centre.

Our training programs are proven and extremely successful – but ONLY if you follow them. Our C.R.E.W who hiked Kokoda in PNG, followed the plan EXACTLY and our only injury was a blister!!!
Member Success at training
Hike Training with Women's Fitness Adventures
There are FOUR components to the training and to MAXIMISE your results, we recommend you get involved in all.
1. Physical Group Hike Training
This is where the C.R.E.W Leaders get to see you in action. It is held QUARTERLY around Brisbane and is a 4 hour/half day duration.
2. Online training – MONTHLY in the comfort of your own home.
Each month, at a specified time and date, we will connect with the Cinque Terre Italian Fitness Adventure C.R.E.W and catch up on where each person is at.
We also provide you the training for the coming weeks. This covers the 3 components of Functional, Cardio and Endurance as outlined above. You will also receive a  comprehensive 4 weekly hiking plan as well as functional exercises.
Don’t worry though – we will take you through it step by step, regardless of the level you are currently at.
3. One on one call with your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader
So that we can best maximise your training and give you the best opportunity to be as fit as possible for your upcoming adventure, we will schedule a 15 minute call to maximise your training opportunities.
Again, this is based on feedback from our past participants who suggested this would be a great addition to training.
4. The closed Facebook Group
We encourage you to comment and support each other in the group. Where possible, get together as a group outside of the formal training times.
Life gets busy and simply having the support of the group when you don’t feel like training, will immediately shift your focus to CAN DO.

I did this adventure in May 2018 and loved it. Everything about it was fantastic: amazing views and hiking, great food and wine (& Aperol spritz), great company and lots of laughs, and our knowledgeable local guides – all overseen by our wonderful WFA host, Jane! If you have the chance to go on this adventure, do it! I highly recommend it. I had such a fun time with a great group of women and made wonderful memories. And don’t forget to have the Aperol!!
