Christchurch – Mt Cook National Park

This morning we drive south to Lake Tekapo, famous for its stunning turquoise waters and the quaint Church of the Good Shepherd, perched daintily by the lake. Stop off enroute, stretch the legs and prepare for the first hike of the trip on Mt John.

We hike up through wilding conifers and tussock grasslands to the summit of Mt John and revel in the 360-degree views of the Patagonia-like landscape. The sweeping Mackenzie Basin is a sparsely populated region with tawny-brown drylands, braided riverbeds and startling glacial lakes extending to the horizon.

We arrive at Mt Cook Village in the late afternoon where we relax and enjoy the breath taking views of NZ’s highest mountain , Aoraki/Mt Cook at 3724 metres.

We spend the next two nights in the heart of the Southern Alps surrounded by that special kind of silence that only big mountains can command.

Mt Cook

Today is a day of rewards! The hike to Sealy Tarns and onto Mueller Ridge provides more and more stunning views with every step.

Just when you think you have taken the most impressive photo possible of the Hooker Valley and Mt Cook Range you will be rewarded with the mirror reflections of the peaks in the glorious Sealy Tarns.

Take time to rest at the tarns and absorb the impressive peaks and valleys. This is the perfect opportunity for those that still have a spring in their step after the climb to continue with the guide onto Mueller Ridge.

From here the vista encompasses the Mueller Glacier and Mt Sefton. As we return to the village by the same route, those that continued to the ridge will meet up again with those who stayed on at the tarns, for the descent.

There is time in the afternoon to relax at the lodge or visit the Information Centre. This is a great place to be inspired by the courageous stories of pioneering mountaineers and to learn about the park’s natural history.

We then spend a second night in the heart of the Southern Alps.

If we are lucky we will see the summit of Aoraki/Mt Cook turn from white to pink as it catches the last of the sun’s rays.

Accommodation: Multi-share group lodge.

Meals: Breakfast|Lunch|Dinner.

Distance: 6-8km/6 hours hiking

Thursday 30th March 2023
Mt Cook – Lake Ohau

After breakfast, we continue our journey south to make the most of the outdoor opportunities on offer.

We drive to nearby Twizel and get fitted out with bikes to ride a section of the impressive Alps to Ocean.

We will cycle along the quiet canal roads before crossing the Lake Ohau weir and weaving our way around the lake on a purpose-built cycle track.

The views are amazing and there will be plenty of time to stop, take photos and admire the mountains and the amazing blue of the glacially fed Lake Ohau.

We leave the bikes at a local lodge and reunite with our vehicle, enjoy our lunch before heading off on the afternoon hike.

We leave the vehicle and head into the hills for an adventure loop further up the valley on to the North Temple Track. The track ends at an impressive cirque basin.

Dinner is at the Lodge tonight.

Accommodation: Lodge Style: Twin share

Meals: Breakfast|Lunch|Dinner.

Distance: 38km/3 hours biking, 3 hours hiking

Friday 31st March 2023
Lake Ohau – Wanaka

After a filling breakfast at Ohau Lodge we hike for a couple of hours through the beech forest beside the mountain stream of Freehold Creek, to an area just below the tree line.

For the keen, and if the if weather is behaving, we can ascend above the tree line into a brilliant alpine basin, home to a variety of native alpine plants including the Mt Cook Lily (Ranunculus lyalli), the world’s largest buttercup.

It is a “there and back” hike so we go as far as the team feels like hiking. Once back on the road we head towards our comfy bed and civilisation for the night.

On arrival in Wanaka we will enjoy a late afternoon tea next to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wanaka.

This is the ideal opportunity to look at the weather forecast and decide what time is best to book the Stand-Up Paddle Boarding from the lakeshore; this evening or first thing in the morning.

Accommodation: Multi-share group lodge.

Meals: Breakfast|Lunch|Dinner.

Distance: 14km/7 hours hiking

Saturday 1st April 2023

Wanaka to Mt Aspiring Hut

This morning we pack our overnight backpacks and drive around Lake Wanaka and up the Matukituki Valley to the start of our hike in the walkers’ paradise of Mt Aspiring National Park.

The hike to Aspiring Hut is unforgettable with views of high glaciated mountains and ice carved valleys. Depending on the weather, we may make the side hike up to Rob Roy Glacier today.

Accommodation: Aspiring Hut, multi-share group style.

Meals: Breakfast|Lunch|Dinner.

Distance: 8km/2-3 hours hiking

Sunday 2nd April 2023

Mt Aspiring to Queenstown

On the last day of our adventure, we can walk to the viewpoint of Rob Roy Glacier if we did not do this yesterday.

As we reach the treeline the beech forest gives way to alpine vegetation. The hanging glaciers beneath Mt Rob Roy are spectacular. The glacier is active and you may be able to hear and see avalanches from this safe viewing point.

The cheeky alpine kea may also join us for a little light entertainment – do not leave any gear unattended!

On the return walk to the vehicle, we will meander alongside the Rob Roy Stream and take in the beautiful waterfalls dotted along the track.

Enjoy the remarkable drive over the Crown Range. From the summit, there are breath-taking views across the Wakatipu Basin and lakes.

We continue the drive into Queenstown – New Zealand’s Adventure Capital with a possible short stop at the historic town of Arrowtown to check out the stunning Autumn colours.

Tonight we have our Traditional Women’s Fitness Adventures  Awards Evening, to celebrate a wonderful week of adventure.

Sustainable Adventures

Our fabulous adventures allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime. At Women’s Fitness Adventures we are also committed to sustainable adventures so that the places and spaces we go will also last well beyond our lifetime and the many generations to follow. Sustainability starts when you join our community and never ends.

We are committed to the principles of minimal impact, leave no trace, tread lightly and give back to the local community. Here’s how we do that for all our adventures – short and long.

  • We encourage ” no plastics” so bring refillable water bottles, reusable cups and cutlery where applicable and using lunchboxes where plastic can be minimised.
  • It’s a ” leave no trace” principle, where all food scraps, toilet waste and rubbish items are carried out.
  • We are committed to reducing paper waste inside our organisation and have a paperless booking system

  • We encourage the use of public transport or car pooling to minimise the use of motor vehicles
  • When flying, we encourage you to offset your emissions by purchasing carbon offsets.

Minimal impact

  • We have a “tread lightly” policy where we stay on known tracks and paths, minimising our impact to bush, plants and wildlife
  • Before we embark on an adventure or trail, we brief you on the flora, fauna and any other considerations that form the uniqueness of the environment in order to understand and appreciate the minimal impact approach.

Accommodation & Adventure Partners

  • Where possible we partner with Eco Certified Businesses who follow the same eco philosophies.
  • Our destinations are all pre arranged and when we camp we do so in designated campsites.
  • Our adventures have all the applicable National Park permits & licences to operate.
  • Our ” give back” policy also applies to the locations we stay – choosing local operators, businesses and townships where funds spent go directly to small businesses – doing our part to create sustainable communities.

Here Is What Other Women Say About Our Adventures

For me, it’s the small group which allows us to get to know one another and the hike on day two was so wonderful – the ocean and cliffs, and then a real trek through everything in the Park – such a varied and interesting hike. Loved it and another one I’d do all over again. Oh, and waking up to the sunrise over the ocean…..

Maree, May 2022

It was such an amazing adventure . There aren’t enough words to thank you Yvonne for all the training ,encouragement and the organisation of such an event and to all for the laughs and chats as we walked along.

The comments I received this morning were that my smile preceded me and I couldn’t wait to tell anyone who asked “how was my week”
