New Zealand Southern Lakes Adventure
This adventure has it all!
Combining the key icons of New Zealand’s Southern Island we have created an adventure that combines outdoor activities, beautiful scenery and an escape into another world.
We do hope you will join Women’s Fitness Adventures for this incredible adventure.
With a combination of hiking, biking and optional Stand Up Paddle Boarding, all in the comfort of cabin accommodation, you have the opportunity to spread your wings and try new outdoor activities.
Our adventure captures hiking to Sealy Tarns for impressive views of Hooker Lake and Aoraki/Mt Cook.
We stay at the Mt Cook Village where we will will enjoy majestic views of the Southern Alps.
Enjoy the isolation of nature and experience hiking the Ohau Ranges. We immerse ourselves in this majestic alpine environment for views over Lake Ohau.
We also experience the walkers paradise of Aspiring National Park, a classic New Zealand hike as you travel through a working farm to find yourself dwarfed by towering mountains and glaciers. This non vehicle area gives us the chance to don the full pack for one night as we hike into Aspiring Hut passing Rob Roy Glacier.
We end our adventure in Queenstown – a picturesque city indeed.
This adventure will fill quickly – don’t delay.

Day 1 Monday 25th March 2019
Arrive into Christchurch in your own time or travel with your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader.
Spend some time getting to know this beautiful city before our C.R.E.W Welcome Dinner this evening.
Accommodation: Hotel, Twin Share
Day 2 Tuesday 26th March 2019
Christchurch – Mt Cook National Park
We are collected from our accommodation around 7.30am and commence our drive south to Lake Tekapo, famous for its stunning turquoise waters and the quaint Church of the Good Shepherd, perched daintily by the lake.
Stop off enroute, stretch the legs and prepare for the first short hike of the trip on Mt John. Hike up (1 hour) through wilding conifers and tussock grasslands to the summit of Mt John and revel in the 360-degree views of the Patagonia-like landscape.
The sweeping Mackenzie Basin is a sparsely populated region with tawny-brown drylands, braided riverbeds and startling glacial lakes extending to the horizon.
We arrive at Mt Cook Village in the early afternoon and commence our hike up the Hooker Valley to view the Hooker Valley Lake at the terminus of the Hooker Glacier; this relatively flat hike takes about 3 hours and is approximately 5 kilometres.
We spend the next two nights in the heart of the Southern Alps surrounded by that special kind of silence that only big mountains can command.
Accommodation: Multi-share group lodge.
Distance: 7 km/4-5 hours hiking
Day 3 Wednesday 27th March 2019
Today is a day of rewards! The hike to Sealy Tarns and onto Mueller Ridge provides more and more stunning views with every step. Just when you think you have taken the most impressive photo possible of the Hooker Valley and Mt Cook Range you will be rewarded with the mirror reflections of the peaks in the glorious Sealy Tarns.
Take time to rest at the tarns and absorb the impressive peaks and valleys. This is the perfect opportunity for those that still have a spring in their step after the climb to continue with the guide onto Mueller Ridge. From here the vista encompasses the Mueller Glacier and Mt Sefton. As we return to the village by the same route, those that continued to the ridge will meet up again with those who stayed on at the tarns, for the descent.
There is time in the afternoon to relax at the lodge or visit the Information Centre.
This is a great place to be inspired by the courageous stories of pioneering mountaineers and to learn about the park’s natural history. For those after more hiking, we can walk the Governors Bush loop, a superb short loop experiencing the last pod of native bush around Mt Cook Village. We then spend a second night in the heart of the Southern Alps. If we are lucky we will see the summit of Aoraki/Mt Cook turn from white to pink as it catches the last of the sun’s rays.
Accommodation: Multi-share group lodge.
Distance: 5-8km/4-5 hours hiking
Day 4 Thursday 28th March 2019
Mt Cook – Lake Ohau
After breakfast, we continue our journey south to make the most of the outdoor opportunities on offer. We drive to nearby Twizel and get fitted out with bikes to ride a section of the impressive Alps to Ocean. We will cycle along the quiet canal roads before crossing the Lake Ohau weir and weaving our way around the lake on a purpose-built cycle track.
The views are amazing and there will be plenty of time to stop, take photos and admire the mountains and the amazing blue of the glacially fed Lake Ohau. We leave the bikes at a local lodge and reunite with our vehicle, enjoy our lunch before heading off on the afternoon hike.
We leave the vehicle and head into the hills for an adventure loop further up the valley near North Temple Valley.
The track commands impressive views looking back towards Lake Ohau.
For those willing to rest their weary legs after the bike an afternoon soaking in the spa with a wine is also not a bad option. Dinner is at the Lodge tonight.
Accommodation: Lodge Style: Twin share
Distance: 38km/3 hours biking, 3 hours hiking
Day 5 Friday 29th March 2019
Lake Ohau – Wanaka
After a filling breakfast at Ohau Lodge it normally takes a couple of hours to hike up through the beech forest beside the mountain stream of Freehold Creek, to an area just below the treeline.
For the keen, and if the if weather is behaving, we can ascend above the treeline into a brilliant alpine basin, home to a variety of native alpine plants including the Mt Cook Lily (Ranunculus lyalli), the world’s largest buttercup.
It is a “there and back” hike so we go as far as the team feels like hiking. Once back on the road we head towards our comfy bed and civilisation for the night. On arrival in Wanaka we will enjoy a late afternoon tea next to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wanaka.
This is the ideal opportunity to look at the weather forecast and decide what time is best to book the Stand-Up Paddle Boarding from the lakeshore; this evening or first thing in the morning.
Accommodation: Multi-share group lodge.
Distance: 14km/7 hours hiking
Day 6 Saturday 30th March 2019
Wanaka to Mt Aspiring Hut
This morning we pack our overnight backpacks and drive around Lake Wanaka and up the Matukituki Valley to the start of our hike in the walkers’ paradise of Mt Aspiring National Park.
The hike to Aspiring Hut is unforgettable with views of high glaciated mountains and ice carved valleys.
Depending on the weather, we may make the side hike up to Rob Roy Glacier today.
Accommodation: Aspiring Hut, multi-share group.
Distance: 8km/2-3 hours hiking
Day 7 Sunday 31st March 2019
Mt Aspiring to Queenstown
On the last day of our adventure, we can walk to the viewpoint of Rob Roy Glacier if we did not do this yesterday.
As we reach the treeline the beech forest gives way to alpine vegetation.
The hanging glaciers beneath Mt Rob Roy are spectacular. The glacier is active and you may be able to hear and see avalanches from this safe viewing point.
The cheeky alpine kea may also join us for a little light entertainment – do not leave any gear unattended! On the return walk to the vehicle, we will meander alongside the Rob Roy Stream and take in the beautiful waterfalls dotted along the track.
Enjoy the remarkable drive over the Crown Range.
From the summit, there are breath-taking views across the Wakatipu Basin and lakes.
We continue the drive into Queenstown – New Zealand’s Adventure Capital via a short stop at the historic town of Arrowtown to check out the stunning Autumn colours.
Tonight we have our Traditional Women’s Fitness Adventures Awards Evening, to celebrate a wonderful week of adventure.
Accommodation: Hotel, Twin share

I loved the hike of course and the location was spectacular but what I love is the camaraderie between the ladies and the nights when you are sitting around the dinner table listening to people’s stories and having a great laugh. You can’t beat that. Fun times with a super bunch of girls.

On days 6 and 7, when completing the trek to Aspiring Hut, you will need to carry all your personal equipment in a full backpack (these will be provided). The weight of this may be up to 15kg.

A comprehensive gear list will be supplied to you. You may wish to purchase our essential pack items from the Women’s Fitness Adventures shop if you do not already have them. This includes thermals, raincoat and thermal gloves.
Our 8 day, 7 night NZ Southern Lakes Adventure is a demanding hike that requires a high level of fitness (graded moderate). We advise you do as much training as you can before the adventure.
The more you train for this adventure, the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world.
Training is included as part of this adventure. Please refer to the “Fitness and Training” tab for information regarding Group Hike Training and online training.
With plenty of advance notice of the trip and time to train, hikers at beginner/intermediate level make this a manageable and rewarding fitness goal, provided you do the training.

FITNESS AND TRAINING
Fitness and Training
We’ve got you covered with the Fitness and Training.
You may be thinking…
“I want to go, but can’t make time for training”
“I want to go but will I be fit enough?”
“I really want to be part of this but don’t know where to start”
One thing ALL of our past C.R.E.W. Adventurers have said is:
“do the training, follow the plan and you will LOVE your adventure even more”
Our training plans have been developed with YOU in mind, based on:
- the latest research
- 10 years of working with women in the health and fitness space, both as a Personal Trainer and a Certified Weight Loss coach
- the cumulative effect of hundreds of kilometres and hours on the trails
- feedback from our C.R.E.W Members.
All Group Hike Training options are perfect opportunities for you to:
- get to know fellow C.R.E.W members on your hike
- gauge your level of fitness
- boost your fitness
Feedback from our past adventurers identifies how important it is to them to participate in both online and offline training. Over 80% of our past adventurers stated that training was great for getting to know fellow adventurers.
Lucy says, ” Hike training helps. You get to know your fellow hikers, – helps with comradeship and you tend to support one another on the adventure, especially if it is out of your comfort zone, ask questions on what gear to bring and find out more about the adventure”
Designed by women, for women, the benefits of our training plan spill over into everyday life and consist of the following components:
- FUNCTIONAL – helping you strengthen the muscles that support the joints. This has benefits not only for your multi day hike, but for life in general.
- CARDIO BOOSTING – designed to elevate the heart rate in a safe way, ensuring that every training session you do will make you better than the last one
- ENDURANCE – nothing substitutes for time on your legs. So we have designed it that way – to work in with you and your lifestyle.
We also understand the physiology of women’s bodies, so rest assured our programs have truly been designed with YOU at the very centre.
Our training programs are proven and extremely successful – but ONLY if you follow them. Our C.R.E.W who hiked Kokoda in PNG, followed the plan EXACTLY and our only injury was a blister!!!
There are FOUR components to the training and to MAXIMISE your results, we recommend you get involved in all.
1. Physical Group Hike Training
This is where the C.R.E.W Leaders get to see you in action. It is held QUARTERLY around Brisbane and is a 4 hour/half day duration.
2. Online training – MONTHLY in the comfort of your own home.
Each month, at a specified time and date, we will connect with the NZ Southern Lakes Adventure C.R.E.W and catch up on where each person is at.
We also provide you the training for the coming weeks. This covers the 3 components of Functional, Cardio and Endurance as outlined above. You will also receive a comprehensive 4 weekly hiking plan as well as functional exercises.
Don’t worry though – we will take you through it step by step, regardless of the level you are currently at.
3. One on one call with your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader
So that we can best maximise your training and give you the best opportunity to be as fit as possible for your upcoming adventure, we will schedule a 15 minute call to maximise your training opportunities.
Again, this is based on feedback from our past participants who suggested this would be a great addition to training.
4. The closed Facebook Group
We encourage you to comment and support each other in the group. Where possible, get together as a group outside of the formal training times.
Life gets busy and simply having the support of the group when you don’t feel like training, will immediately shift your focus to CAN DO.
