The Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure

An exhilarating and breathtakingly beautiful 96 km plus hike along Victoria’s rugged Shipwreck Coast.

Considered one of Australia’s great hikes, our Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure captures the essence of the rugged Australian Coastline.

Situated on the coast in Victoria, a few hours drive from Melbourne, this is an amazing hiking experience.

The Great Ocean Road Walk is exhilarating, rugged and diverse in its landscape. The hiking trail follows the contour of the Victorian coastline allowing us to experience spectacular coastal views, coastal forest, beaches and local wildlife.

Our Hiking Adventure is cabin accommodation, day pack only hiking with a total hiking distance is approximately 96km – hiking from Shelly Beach to the iconic Twelve Apostles

Monday 27th April 

 

Arrival day into Melbourne – hike to Blanket Bay

 

It’s an early flight to Melbourne today before our pick up and transfer to Apollo Bay for the start of our hike.

After a short briefing, we collect our information pack and our freshly packed lunch and it’s a short transfer to Shelly Beach  to take the first steps of our 96km hike.

The start of the hike commences at Shelly Beach before we meander into the rainforest of the Great Otway National Park.

We hike past tree ferns and tall eucalypts found in the wet gullies, through tall forests and along old forestry tracks. We may be lucky enough to spot black wallabies who inhabit this area, before winding down the trail onto beautiful Blanket Bay.

Tuesday 28th April

 

Blanket Bay to Cape Otway

 

Today we enjoy the wonderful views over Parker Inlet.

The vegetation changes to dry coastal forests inhabited by echidnas and king parrots.

Following the track to Victoria’s oldest lighthouse, the Cape Otway Lighthouse, we enjoy breathtaking views of Bass Strait from the cliff tops.

Today we visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse where we  can walk up to the top of the 18 metre, 150 year old light station, and learn a little of the lives of the hard-working, isolated and incredibly resourceful lighthouse keepers. We also visit the telegraph station built in 1859 and the World War II radar station.

All the while on our hike, we must pause and look up into the Manna Gums, as they are home to the local koalas.

Wednesday 29th April
Cape Otway to Castle Cove

 

Setting off today we pass the old light station cemetery. The tombstones reflect the hardships experienced by the early settlers here. The track then meanders on towards the wild and wonderful Station Beach, which is littered with driftwood.

We have the option of  a small detour to Rainbow Falls, or to continue hiking along the cliff tops with spectacular views.

We hike along the Aire Heritage River and over its bridge, towards Castle Cove. This magnificent beach has its own lookout station; a great way to end our days hike!

Thursday 30th April
Castle Cove to Johanna Beach

 

This section of the hike features rocky escarpments and coastal views.

We pass heath land, wild flowers and grass trees.

We walk along the magnificent stretch of Johanna Beach, all the while on the look out for birds such as the majestic wedge-tailed eagles and white bellied sea eagles.

Friday 1st May
Milanesia to The Gables

 

The trail today descends onto the rugged shoreline of Milanesia Beach.

As the track rises back to the cliff tops you are presented with outstanding views from the coastal forests, high on the sea cliffs.

We hike on through the blue gums, ending amongst the heath at the breathtaking Gables Lookout.

 

Distance:                  18 kilometres/7 hours

Saturday 2nd May

 

The Gables to the Twelve Apostles

 

Today is our last day and we start our hike through the Sheoak trees, dropping down onto historical Wreck Beach with its old anchors rising out of the sand.

We continue on towards the Gellibrand estuary and as the track climbs up to the last section of the walk we see the iconic Twelve Apostles in the distance.

Here we take a celebratory group photo from the official 12 Apostles viewing platform.

Late afternoon we transfer back to Apollo Bay to our accommodation for our Traditional Women’s Fitness Adventures Awards Dinner.

Apollo Bay- Melbourne Airport

 

After a leisurely breakfast we farewell the beautiful coast.

Our 3 hour transfer takes us to Melbourne airport to make our afternoon flights and head for home.

ACCOMMODATION

On our Great Ocean Road Fitness Adventure all our accommodation supports local businesses and is a combination of comfortable motel style rooms and cabin style accommodation to rest, relax and recharge after a days hiking.

With hot showers, comfortable beds and communal dining/lounging areas, you will be refreshed and ready to hike again the following day.

Our adventure offers 6 nights in twin share, cabin style/motel accommodation.

MEALS

Our Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure goes hand in hand with great food.

From arrival in Apollo Bay to return to Melbourne Airport, all delicious food and snacks are included.

We have designed delicious and nutritious meals to satisfy the hungry hiker along with snacks and treats to suit all taste buds. Our meals cater for food allergies and intolerances where applicable.

Our Traditional Celebration and Awards Dinner is held at an iconic location unique to the Great Ocean Road. A perfect way to recognise achievement and end the adventure.

6 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners and all delicious snacks on the trail.

TRAVEL AND TRANSFERS

It’s up to you whether you want to travel on the same flights as your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader or meet us in Melbourne.

We will confirm with you our Leader flight details so you can make your own flight arrangements.

Regardless of whether you travel with your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leader or meet us at the pick up point, transfers from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) to Apollo Bay and return are included.

All of our transfers occur in Commercially Operated and Transport Department Approved Vehicles

 

YOUR LEADERS

From the moment you land in Melbourne (or on the plane if you decide to travel together), until the time of your return, your Women’s Fitness Adventures C.R.E.W Leaders are with you every step of the way.

Our goal is to ensure you have a fabulous adventure hiking the Great Ocean Road.

Our Leaders are fully trained in Remote Area First Aid and hold current CPR qualifications.

With previous experience on this trail, they will share the highlights, points of interest, scenic viewpoints and more.

GEAR AND EQUIPMENT

Once your booking is confirmed we will supply you with a comprehensive Gear/Packing list.

We know from experience what’s vital, whats nice to have and what’s not necessary.

That’s why our Gear/Packing list is so important. We will go through it with you as part of the training.

If you need to buy anything, you can use your Membership Card to take advantage of our partner offer – a discount at the Adventure Store (including online). Better still, come along to one of the Information and Education evenings at the store to not only get the right information, you can also get up to 20% off on the night.

In addition to your own gear, your C.R.E.W Leaders are carrying Emergency Communications Equipment and a comprehensive Group First Aid Kit

SAFETY

Safety is our number one priority.

Your Women’s Fitness Adventures Leader is fully trained in Remote Area First Aid and holds current CPR Qualifications.

In addition, we carry a group first aid kit and emergency communications equipment

All our transportation is provided in commercially registered, expertly maintained  tour vehicles & trailers, with airport and hotel pick up and drop off where applicable.

We work with approved local tourism operators for our accommodation and meal requirements.

KNOWLEDGE

 

With previous experience on this trail, your C.R.E.W Leaders will share the highlights, points of interest, scenic viewpoints and more.

Supported by local business, you will come away with a greater understanding of why this is one of Australia’s iconic trails.

Our C.R.E.W Leaders bring with them extensive knowledge in training women for multi day hikes. Combined, they have also hiked many of the world’s great trails and know what the sense of achievement is like.

FITNESS TRAINING

One of the most common asked questions is ” Will I be fit enough?”

As soon as you book your Multi Day Adventure, you can get started with training.

Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with a current introductory level of fitness will find this an achieveable goal – provided you put in the training. 

Here’s what you get:

  • Monthly Group Hike Training (for local Brisbane participants)
  • Monthly online Training (non local Brisbane participants)
  • Quarterly online Group Adventure meetings for fitness motivation, hints, tips and Q&A sessions
  • Access to the closed Great Ocean Road Fitness Adventure Facebook Group.

Monthly hike training is delivered in a group setting in Brisbane. Whilst this is optional, it is strongly recommended. Past adventurers tell us that Hike Training is great for three reasons:

  1. getting to know the others on your hike
  2. gauging your level of fitness
  3. boosting your fitness

The training program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.  

 

FRIENDSHIP

From the moment you book on to the Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure, you will begin to make new friends.

This can be either through the training, the closed Facebook Group, the online meetings or at other adventures.

Once your payment is confirmed, you will be invited into a closed Facebook Group Page that you have access to, where you can converse with your fellow hikers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What you carry

    You will be required to carry a day pack of approximately 5-7kg.

    Your pack will include the following items: minimum of 2 litres water, sunscreen, raincoat, warm top, swimmers(optional), lunch, camera, hat and any items of a personal nature, including personal first aid/medications.

    A comprehensive gear list will be supplied and explained once your booking is confirmed.

    Day pack hiking with Women's Fitness Adventures

  • Fitness Level

    We recommend that you have a moderate level of fitness for this adventure. You should be able to walk consecutive days, minimum 15km/day and have a good level of cardio fitness.

    Our goal is to give you the best adventure possible.

    We know, from experience and feedback, that the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the adventure. You are also less likely to sustain an injury.

    Hike Training is included as part of the adventure. The program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.  

    Brisbane participants have the option of attending monthly hike training sessions. Non Brisbane residents have a monthly call and a training plan written if desired. With plenty of advance notice of the trip and time to train, those with a current introductory level of fitness will find this an achieveable goal – provided you put in the training.

  • Weather

    As much as we would like to, we have no control over the weather.

    Daytime temperatures will vary from low teens to high 20’s. Night time temperatures can get cold.

    That’s why it’s important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather.

    It is very important you bring the right gear for the conditions.

    As it is a coastal region on the southern part of Australia, temperatures can vary and the weather can change quickly.

    With our comprehensive gear list and briefing sessions, you will be more than prepared.

    In the event of extreme weather conditions, the adventure may vary from the itinerary.

    Please be aware of this and accept this as part of the adventure. Your personal safety is our highest priority.

    In completing and submitting the Booking Form, you agree to be bound by these conditions which constitute the agreement between Women’s Fitness Adventures ABN 99 126 975 880 and you.

    No purported variation of these conditions will be effective unless in writing and signed by a person so authorised by Women’s Fitness Adventures. In these terms and conditions reference to “Women’s Fitness Adventures representatives” means staff of Women’s Fitness Adventures and its officers, employees, agents, licensees, guides and other third parties and representatives and the land management authorities in each country in which the tour is conducted, or any of them.

    Prices

    All prices are subject to availability and can be withdrawn or varied without notice. The price is only guaranteed once paid for in full by you.

    Price changes can occur between the time you make a reservation and the date of full payment.

    Factors influencing price changes can be currency fluctuations, fuel surcharges, taxes and other provider increases outside of our control.

    • An initial deposit of 20% is required to secure your place on this adventure.
    • Once a booking is confirmed, payment must be received within the payment terms as advised by Women’s Fitness Adventures in the table below.
    • Failure to pay within the deadline will result in automatic cancellation of your booking.
    • Payments are accepted by direct deposit, by cheque or by credit card. There are no surcharges for bookings made through the Women’s Fitness Adventures website
    • When your credit card is processed by Women’s Fitness Adventures you agree to not have your payment ‘charged back’ or reversed by your credit card provider where the services have been provided

    *As our adventures are so popular, please be aware that if you cancel your place, it will most likely be taken by someone else so you should consider this carefully. No refunds are provided should you have to leave the adventure early.

     

    Travel Insurance

     

    Travel insurance must be taken out at this point and a copy of your Travel Documentation supplied with your completed Participant Document to guarantee your place.

    • Please make sure that you read, understand and accept all of the fine print contained within your insurance policy before purchase to ensure it covers all of your personal requirements.
    • Please ensure your Travel Insurance covers you for cancellation, medical and repatriation expenses, personal injury and accident, death, loss of personal baggage and money and personal liability insurance. It is also important to read the fine print in relation to parents over the age of 80 and what is included/excluded from your policy. If using your credit card insurance, please check the terms and conditions on this before booking with us.

    Women’s Fitness Adventures and its partners are not liable for any out of pocket expenses that insurance will not cover and will not be held responsible financially or in kind should your insurance not cover your personal circumstances.

    Itineraries and brochures

     

    Itineraries and other details are published in good faith as statements of intention only and reasonable changes in the itinerary and related items may be made where deemed necessary or advisable by Women’s Fitness Adventures.

    The information contained in Women’s Fitness Adventures website, Facebook Pages, brochures, itineraries, and any other published content, is to the best of Women’s Fitness Adventures knowledge, correct at the time of publication.

     

    Route changes, Postponement, Cancellation or Delay.

     

    Women’s Fitness Adventures reserves the right to:

    • Cancel or modify any routes within the adventures or objectives set out in the itinerary; or
    • Substitute different or equivalent routes within the adventures in place of cancelled or modified routes, or
    • Postpone, cancel or delay (either in relation to the departure or arrival times or the duration of the adventures) any such aspect of the tour if, at the absolute discretion of Women’s Fitness Adventures, it is necessary to do so due to inclement weather, snow or icy conditions or conditions that are otherwise likely to be hazardous or dangerous or due to any other adverse or threatening conditions whether political or military or terrorist or otherwise or if, in the absolute discretion of Women’s Fitness Adventures there is a likelihood of any such event occurring which may impact upon the safety of the participants, or if an act or omission of a third party prevents the tour or the aspect of the tour being undertaken in accordance with your booking or for any other reason considered necessary by Women’s Fitness Adventures.
    • In the event of any change, modification, cancellation postponement or delay under this condition, you acknowledge that you will have no right of refund of the adventure price (whether in whole or in part) and no right to claim compensation for any injury, loss or damage or other additional expenses incurred by virtue of the change, modification, cancellation postponement or delay.
    • Women’s Fitness Adventures also reserves, at its absolute discretion, the right to cancel any tour due to any government travel warning or advice, or any change in such warning or advice. Travel insurance may compensate you depending on the circumstances.

     

    Cancellation by Women’s Fitness Adventures.

     

    Women’s Fitness Adventures reserves the right to cancel a departure and will advise you of such cancellations no later than 60 days before the adventure departure date.

    If due to ‘Force Majeure’ or government travel advice, Women’s Fitness Adventures reserves the right to cancel a departure at any time. With any form of cancellation, Women’s Fitness Adventures will do it’s best to offer you alternative arrangements if available, and if the price of your alternative adventure is of lower value than the original booking we will refund the difference to you. If you do not accept alternative arrangements we will refund all payments you have made to Women’s Fitness Adventures, (in case of ‘Force Majeure’ or government travel advice refunds will be less any unrecoverable costs). Women’s Fitness Adventures will not be liable for any additional costs incurred by you.

    Force Majeure Women’s Fitness Adventures will not be liable for any delay in, change to or cancellation of trips due to ‘Force Majeure’. ‘Force Majeure’ definition means a circumstance beyond the reasonable control of Women’s Fitness Adventures and includes, but is not limited to, war or threat of war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity, industrial dispute, disease, industrial or nuclear disaster, adverse weather conditions, fire and strikes.

    Women’s Fitness Adventures reserve the right either before or during the course of the adventure to refuse to carry or accommodate any client which it reasonably considers, in the light of the best interests of all participants within the adventure group and crew, to be unsuitable by reason of physical or mental condition or unruly behaviour.

    Cancellation due to small adventure numbers. 

    Women’s Fitness Adventures reserves the right to cancel any adventure prior to departure in the event that there are too few people booked on the adventure. In this case, you will be given a full refund of the amount already paid by you. You will not be entitled to claim any additional amounts or seek any compensation for any injury, loss, expenses or damage (either direct or consequential) or for any loss of time or inconvenience which may result from such cancellation (including but not limited to visa, passport and vaccination charges, or departure, gear purchases, airport and airline taxes or annual leave).

    We require a minimum of 9 trekkers for The Great Ocean Road Adventure. If numbers do not reach this level we reserve the right to cancel, or change the dates of the adventure or refer you to another existing adventure.

    Adventure numbers are regularly reviewed and we will notify you of any cancellations no later than 60 days prior to your selected trek.

    Medical Disclosure. It is your responsibility and you must advise women’s Fitness Adventures of any pre-existing medical condition and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of you requiring medical attention while on our tours. Women’s Fitness Adventures or our suppliers may require additional medical assessment by a medical practitioner. Women’s Fitness Adventures reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your booking and refund the money paid by you, less any unrecoverable costs. Women’s Fitness Adventures also reserves the right to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.
