It’s an early flight to Melbourne today before our pick up and transfer to Apollo Bay for the start of our hike.
After a short briefing, we collect our information pack and our freshly packed lunch and it’s a short transfer to Shelly Beach to take the first steps of our 96km hike.
The start of the hike commences at Shelly Beach before we meander into the rainforest of the Great Otway National Park.
We hike past tree ferns and tall eucalypts found in the wet gullies, through tall forests and along old forestry tracks. We may be lucky enough to spot black wallabies who inhabit this area, before winding down the trail onto beautiful Blanket Bay.

Following the track to Victoria’s oldest lighthouse, the Cape Otway Lighthouse, we enjoy breathtaking views of Bass Strait from the cliff tops.
Today we visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse where we can walk up to the top of the 18 metre, 150 year old light station, and learn a little of the lives of the hard-working, isolated and incredibly resourceful lighthouse keepers. We also visit the telegraph station built in 1859 and the World War II radar station.
All the while on our hike, we must pause and look up into the Manna Gums, as they are home to the local koalas.

One of the most common asked questions is ” Will I be fit enough?”
As soon as you book your Multi Day Adventure, you can get started with training.
Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with a current introductory level of fitness will find this an achieveable goal – provided you put in the training.
Here’s what you get:
- Monthly Group Hike Training (for local Brisbane participants)
- Monthly online Training (non local Brisbane participants)
- Quarterly online Group Adventure meetings for fitness motivation, hints, tips and Q&A sessions
- Access to the closed Great Ocean Road Fitness Adventure Facebook Group.
Monthly hike training is delivered in a group setting in Brisbane. Whilst this is optional, it is strongly recommended. Past adventurers tell us that Hike Training is great for three reasons:
- getting to know the others on your hike
- gauging your level of fitness
- boosting your fitness
The training program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.
From the moment you book on to the Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure, you will begin to make new friends.
This can be either through the training, the closed Facebook Group, the online meetings or at other adventures.
Once your payment is confirmed, you will be invited into a closed Facebook Group Page that you have access to, where you can converse with your fellow hikers.
When we asked fellow adventurers what they like best about Women’s Fitness Adventures, here is what they had to say
“Friendships, broadening horizons and keeping fit” Debby, March 2019
“Sisterhood” Anne, March 2019
“Friendship, fun and camaraderie” Michelle, March 2019.
Our multi day hikes are transformational. Some kind of “magic” happens with the group.
Here is what our members had to say…
” For me the highlight was participating! I had been longing to do a multi day hike since joining Women’s Fitness Adventures 2 years ago. I jumped at the opportunity to take a risk and commit. Being physically able to complete the walk without too much difficulty was also a highlight. Having never done back to back walks I wasn’t sure if my legs would co-operate with my heart and mind! It just shows what can happen when you put one foot in front of the other and begin. 100km! “ Peta, November 2018.
“It’s hard to describe the highlight of the Great Ocean Road hike as I enjoyed every moment of the hike – the scenery, the terrain, the smell of the bush, the crashing of the waves, the sand between my toes, the cold ocean water on my feet, the fauna, the flowers, the animals, the challenges, the company and friendships made on the hike”. Gail, November 2018
And on our adventures in general…
“Everyone of you made my adventure so inspiring. The support of each other made the trails so enjoyable. We hiked and we learnt so many new things along the way. The food, the drinks, the dress ups and laughter were so special. Every time I think of something that happened it makes me full of happiness. Thank you to each one of my fellow adventurers for a wonderful experience to remember for ever. Looking forward to many more adventures in the future” Margaret, May 2019.

Here Is What Other Women Say About Our Adventures
Jane Augustine, March 2019
“What I like best about Women’s Fitness Adventures is having the opportunity to visit beautiful places in Australia and the world with a group of like minded ladies who love to exercise in the outdoors. I don’t have to organise anything on the adventure but enjoy the location, culture, food and wine in the company of supportive and inspiring women”
Sharon Donsky. May 2019
“What’s the best thing about a Women’s Fitness Adventure? Where to start… In hindsight the highlight was definitely the company and fun times with the other women. Support and laughs along the trails and the hilarity of the dinners”
