It’s an early flight to Melbourne today before our pick up and transfer to Apollo Bay for the start of our hike.

After a short briefing, we collect our information pack and our freshly packed lunch (YUM-O) and it’s a short transfer to Shelley Beach  to take the first steps of our big adventure.

The start of the hike commences at Shelly Beach before we meander into the rainforest of the Great Otway National Park.

We hike past tree ferns and tall eucalypts found in the wet gullies, through tall forests and along old forestry tracks. We may be lucky enough to spot black wallabies who inhabit this area, before ending up in Apollo Bay for our transfer to our evening accommodation.

Parker Hill – Aire River

Today we enjoy the wonderful views over Parker Inlet.

The vegetation changes to dry coastal forests inhabited by echidnas and king parrots.

Following the track to Victoria’s oldest lighthouse, the Cape Otway Lighthouse, we enjoy breathtaking views of Bass Strait from the cliff tops.

Today we visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse (dependant on opening hours) where we  can walk up to the top of the 18 metre, 150 year old light station, and learn a little of the lives of the hard-working, isolated and incredibly resourceful lighthouse keepers. We also visit the telegraph station built in 1859 and the World War II radar station.

All the while on our hike, we must pause and look up into the Manna Gums, as they are home to the local koalas.

Setting off today we pass the old light station cemetery. The tombstones reflect the hardships experienced by the early settlers here. The track then meanders on towards the wild and wonderful Station Beach, which is littered with driftwood.

Our Great Ocean Road Fitness Adventure is graded Moderate.

The hiking is moderate with daily hikes ranging from 8-20km.

The terrain is undulating and there is some beach/sand walking.

One of the most common asked questions is ” Will I be fit enough?”

As soon as you book your Multi Day Adventure, you can get started with training.

Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with an introductory plus level of fitness will find this an achievable goal – provided you put in the training.

Here’s what you get:

  • A hike training plan relevant to your adventure.
  • An online Group Adventure meeting for fitness motivation, hints, tips and Q&A sessions
  • Access to the closed Great Ocean Road Fitness Adventure Facebook Group.

In person Group Hike Training is available and is an optional extra. The link to purchase the sessions is available through the Adventures page on the website.

These training sessions are held in Brisbane once a month on a Sunday and are shared with members booked on a variety of adventures.

These sessions are ideal if you are:

  • Wanting to benchmark your fitness level
  • Looking to meet other women on adventures
  • Keen to boost your fitness level.

The training programs have been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on many decades of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.

From the moment you book on to the Great Ocean Road Hiking Adventure, you will begin to make new friends.

This can be either through the training, the closed Facebook Group, the online meetings or at other adventures.

Once your payment is confirmed, you will be invited into a closed Facebook Group Page that you have access to, where you can converse with your fellow hikers.

When we asked fellow adventurers what they like best about Women’s Fitness Adventures, here is what they had to say

“Friendships, broadening horizons and keeping fit” Debby, February 2021

“Sisterhood” Anne, March 2021

“Friendship, fun and camaraderie” Beth, May 2021.

Our multi day hikes are transformational. Some kind of “magic” happens with the group.

Here is what our members had to say…

” For me the highlight was participating! I had been longing to do a multi day hike since joining Women’s Fitness Adventures 2 years ago. I jumped at the opportunity to take a risk and commit. Being physically able to complete the walk without too much difficulty was also a highlight. Having never done back to back walks I wasn’t sure if my legs would co-operate with my heart and mind! It just shows what can happen when you put one foot in front of the other and begin. 100km! “  Peta, Great Ocean Road Hike

“It’s hard to describe the highlight of the Great Ocean Road hike as I enjoyed every moment of the hike – the scenery, the terrain, the smell of the bush, the crashing of the waves, the sand between my toes, the cold ocean water on my feet, the fauna, the flowers, the animals, the challenges, the company and friendships made on the hike”.  Sandy, May 2021

And on our adventures in general…

“Thank you very much for a great weekend. I was anxious that I would not be up to the challenge but with the help of everyone’s support and confidence I was able to complete it. I also enjoyed the great camaraderie between all of us. Hoping I will see everyone on another Women’s Fitness Adventure one day.” Carol

  • Adventure type, grading & your participation

This is a MODERATE multi day adventure.

The trails are well marked and traversed. However the paths may be uneven and rocky underfoot, due to the nature of it being outdoors and a natural environment. There will be some steep ascents where you will get out of breath. As well as some descents where you will need to concentrate. With the right focus commitment to hike training, this is suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness.

A MODERATE level of fitness means:

    • There are consecutive days hiking where we are out “all day”, so having a good level of endurance (the ability to be out hiking all day) is necessary
    • The hiking consists of hills, stairs and uneven paths. Many paths are uneven underfoot.
    • A good level of cardio fitness is required – so being able to recover your breath after hiking hills; hiking up hills/stairs without stopping every few moments (the goal is to keep going no matter how slow you might think you are).
    • Stability on legs is required so that you can handle the uneven terrain.
    • The ability to carry a pack of up to 8kg with all of your personal requirements, including water, over the trails.

By booking into this adventure you agree to our Booking Terms and Conditions, which includes completing our Participant Document for this adventure. You should only participate if you feel you are medically able to do so. If, at any time, the leader feels concerned about your ability to participate or is concerned for your safety whilst on the adventure, they may ask you to ”sit out” or not participate in a particular program or session. You accept that this is predominantly an outdoor activity in a bush setting and it carries associated risks, including but not limited to uneven surfaces, rocks, weather conditions and animals.

  • Fitness Level

    Here’s what you get:

    • A hike training plan relevant to your adventure.
    • ONE online Group Adventure meeting for fitness motivation, hints, tips and Q&A sessions
    • Access to the closed Great Ocean Road Adventure Facebook Group.

These training sessions are held in Brisbane once a month on a Sunday and are shared with members booked on a variety of adventures.

We advise you do as much training as you can before the adventure.  The more you train for this hike, the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world.

As much as we would like to, we have no control over the weather.

  • Sustainable Adventures

Our fabulous adventures allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime. At Women’s Fitness Adventures we are also committed to sustainable adventures so that the places and spaces we go will also last well beyond our lifetime and the many generations to follow. Sustainability starts when you join our community and never ends.

We are committed to the principles of minimal impact, leave no trace, tread lightly  and give back to the local community. Here’s how we do that for all of our adventures (short and long)

    • We encourage “no plastics” so bringing refillable water bottles, reusable cups and cutlery where applicable and using lunchboxes where plastic can be minimised
    • It’s a leave no trace principle, so all food scraps, toilet waste and rubbish items are carried out. (See our Masterclass on Toileting for the Trail)
    • We are committed to reducing paper waste inside our organisation and have implemented a paperless booking system.

    • For this adventure, once in country, we use either foot or public transport as our mode of movement.
    • When flying, we encourage you to offset your emissions by purchasing carbon offsets.

    Minimal impact

    • We have a “tread lightly” policy where we stay on known tracks and paths, minimising our impact to bush, plants and wildlife.
    • Before we embark on an adventure or trail, we brief you on the flora, fauna and any other considerations that form the uniqueness of the environment so that you understand and appreciate the minimal impact approach.

    Accommodation & Adventure Partners

    • Where possible we partner with Eco Certified businesses who follow the same eco philosophies
    • Our adventures have all the applicable National Park permits and licenses to operate (or International equivalents)
    • Our “give back” policy also applies to the locations we stay – choosing local operators, businesses and townships where funds spent go directly to small business owners – doing our part to create sustainable communities.
