Friday 13th October 2023

Abel Tasman National Park

Experience a part of New Zealand’s treasured heritage and paddle a double hulled outrigger canoe in the crystal-clear waters of the Abel Tasman departing directly from Kaiteriteri.

After a karakia (blessing) we learn the etiquette (tikanga) associated with waka before becoming familiar with the boat and embarking on a journey to remember.

Past adventurers tell us this was one of the highlights.

We finish the waka trip at Watering Cove, Anchorage or Torrent Bay and then hike approximately 2-3 hours back to Medlands for the water taxi ride to Kaiteriteri.

From here, it is a short journey back to Nelson and if time permits, the opportunity to explore this vibrant and arty little town if you wish.

We enjoy dinner tonight in a local restaurant.

Accommodation: Hotel style, Twin share

Meals: Breakfast |  Lunch | Dinner

Distance: 11km |2- 3 hours hiking

  • Note this activity is weather dependant and maybe subject to change depending on the conditions on the day.

Saturday 14th October 2023

Murchison

Today is summit day.

Sit back and enjoy the picturesque drive to Flora Saddle in Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest park on our way to the trail head.

On a well-formed track, we meander our way up to the bush-line and the Mt Arthur hut walking through beech forest and groves of candelabra-like mountain neinei.

For those feeling keen and are up for the challenge we can venture further with the guide along the rugged marble ridge-line towards the summit of Mt Arthur.

Alternatively, perch on a rock and soak in the view before reuniting with the group for the descent.

Accommodation: Basic Cabin style accommodation, Group share

Distance: 8.5 to 18.5km

Time: 4-8 hours hiking

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Sunday 15th October, 2023

Paparoa National Park

After breakfast, the day begins with a relaxing drive toward the West Coast along the mighty Buller River.

On the drive we get our first glimpse of New Zealand’s impressive Podocarp forest.

Arriving at the coast, our guide drops us at the top of the coastal walk to Cape Foulwind (aptly named by Captain Cook – as beware the seals are a bit smelly!)

We then rejoin the guide at the seal colony near Tauranga Bay before driving along the scenic West Coast en-route to one of the country’s best-kept secrets – Paparoa National Park for our first overnight hike.

Hiking up the rumbling Fox River, we learn the unique Kiwi art of river crossing.

This will come in handy in order to reach the campsite under tonight’s accommodation – the amazing Ballroom Overhang – a massive fluviatile cave.

Crank up the campfire and settle in for the night for a real New Zealand authentic experience.

Accommodation: Ballroom Overhang, Camping.

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Hiking Distance: 8km

Hiking time: Approx. 4 hours

*note that our ability to stay overnight at the Ballroom Overhang is entirely dependant upon existing & forecast weather conditions and river levels. If we are unable to complete the Ballroom Overhang as planned, an alternate trail and accommodation will be provided.

Monday 16th October 2023

Punakaiki

Heading out from the Ballroom Overhang, we wander along quaint rivers, channeled through towering limestone cliffs covered in lush native rainforest.

The scenery in this area is truly breathtaking, and unparalleled in the South Island. Take the opportunity to explore nearby caves, have a swim, and study the stalactites.

Leaving the rivers behind, we hike along an old inland pack-track that winds its way through tranquil native forest before emerging at the road end where our van awaits.

A short drive gets us to the small tourist town of Punakaiki.

Here you can grab a coffee if you wish and wander through the geologic phenomenon that is the Pancake Rocks – scientists still cannot agree on how they formed. If the tide is right, you will get to witness the magnificent blowholes in action.

Tonight, we stay in lovely properties set in the bush near the coast. A saunter down to the beach to view the sunset is highly recommended.

Accommodation: Twin Share Holiday House.

Hiking Distance: 8km

Hiking time: Approx. 4 hours

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

  • note the hike today is dependant upon whether we were able to complete the Ballroom Overhang. Accommodation tonight is as per itinerary.

Tuesday 17th October 2023

Arthurs Pass/Hokitika

Weather permitting, it is cycling day*

This morning is a short drive down the coast to the historic and quaint town of Hokitika.

Get fitted out with bikes and cycle the stunning West Coast Cycle Trail, between Milltown and Kumara which follows a series of old bush tramlines built in the 1860s to cart coal.

The 38 kilometre ride starts a few km before the quirky collection of replica Wild West themed buildings at Cowboy Paradise – this really is the Wild West!

From here the trail winds through a mixed landscape of lush farmland and beautiful regenerating rainforest. It crosses a series of bridges over mountain streams before following a trail around several reservoirs to the historic town of Kumara.

At the end of the day there is time for a celebratory drink at the beautifully restored Theatre Royal Hotel before checking into our nearby accommodation.

*Note: If you do not wish to cycle then there is the option to meander around Hokitika while our guide does their tasks before being transferred to our accommodation.

Accommodation: Cottage style, Twin share.

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Tonight we have our Traditional Women’s Fitness Adventures Celebration Dinner and Awards evening.

Cycling distance: 38km

Cycling time: all day. We stop for photos, lunch and regular breaks.

Wednesday 18th October 2023

Return to Christchurch and home

This morning we turn our nose towards Christchurch and home

It’s a spectacular drive across the Southern Alps via Arthurs Pass.

A meander among the limestone crags at Castle Hill or a short walk in Arthurs Pass National Park to stretch the legs before the drive across the plains to Christchurch is also a must!

We will aim to have you back in Christchurch by mid-late afternoon for early evening flights. (note do not book a departure flight any earlier than 6pm)

Meals: Breakfast | Lunch

ADVENTURE TYPE & GRADING

This adventure is graded as MODERATE.

This is a multi activity adventure combining

  • Outrigging
  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Cycling

Our trails in NZ are varied – from some gentle flat trails, to hillier sections and possibly, overgrown paths where you will need to have the ability to step up, down, around or over.

A MODERATE level of fitness is required.

What this means is:

  • There are consecutive days hiking where we are out ” all day”, so having a good level of endurance (the ability to be out hiking all day) is necessary
  • The hiking consists of hills, stairs and uneven paths.
  • A good level of cardio fitness is required – so being able to recover your breath after hiking hills; hiking up hills/stairs without stopping every few moments (the goal is to keep going no matter how slow you might think you are).
  • Stability on legs is required so that you can handle the uneven terrain.

    SUSTAINABLE ADVENTURES

Our fabulous adventures allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime. At Women’s Fitness Adventures we are also committed to sustainable adventures so that the places and spaces we go will also last well beyond our lifetime and the many generations to follow. Sustainability starts when you join our community and never ends.

We are committed to the principles of minimal impact, leave no trace, tread lightly  and give back to the local community. Here’s how we do that for all of our adventures (short and long)

    Consumables

    • We encourage “no plastics” so bringing refillable water bottles, reusable cups and cutlery where applicable and using lunchboxes where plastic can be minimised
    • It’s a leave no trace principle, so all food scraps, toilet waste and rubbish items are carried out. (see our Masterclass on Toileting for the Trail)
    • We are committed to reducing paper waste inside our organisation and have implemented  a paperless booking system.

    Transport

    • We encourage the use of public transport or car pooling to minimise the use of motor vehicles.
    • When flying, we encourage you to offset your emissions by purchasing carbon offsets.

    Minimal impact

    • We have a “tread lightly” policy where we stay on known tracks and paths, minimising our impact to bush, plants and wildlife.
    • Before we embark on an adventure or trail, we brief you on the flora, fauna and any other considerations that form the uniqueness of the environment so that you understand and appreciate the minimal impact approach.

    Accommodation & Adventure Partners

    • Where possible we partner with fellow Eco Certified businesses who follow the same eco philosophies
    • Our destinations are all pre arranged and when we camp we do so in designated campsites.
    • Our adventures have all the applicable National Park permits and licenses to operate.
    • Our “give back” policy also applies to the locations we stay – choosing local operators, businesses and townships where funds spent go directly to small business owners – doing our part to create sustainable communities.

Here Is What Other Women Say About Our Adventures

“Embrace the wilderness and enjoy the feeling of being part of a group of wonderful women while at the same time feeling (in many parts) that your group are the only ones there”

Susan

“The highlight was the amazing scenery with beaches with rarely anyone else around. Getting to know some fantastic women and enjoying their company at the end of the day. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable and it was great to have a different one each day”

Sue
