Abel Tasman National Park

Experience a part of New Zealand’s treasured heritage and paddle a double hulled outrigger canoe in the crystal-clear waters of the Abel Tasman departing directly from Kaiteriteri.

After a karakia (blessing) we learn the etiquette (tikanga) associated with waka before becoming familiar with the boat and embarking a journey to remember.

We finish the waka trip at Watering Cove, Anchorage or Torrent Bay and then hike approximately 2 hours back to Medlands for the water taxi ride to Kaiteriteri.

From here, it is a short journey back to Nelson and time permitting, explore this vibrant and arty little town.

We enjoy dinner tonight in a local restaurant.

Accommodation: Hotel – twin share

Wednesday 25th March  2020

Today is summit day.

Sit back and enjoy the picturesque drive to Flora Saddle in Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest park on our way to the trail head.

On a well-formed track, we meander our way up to the bush-line and the Mt Arthur hut walking through beech forest and groves of candelabra-like mountain neinei.

For those feeling keen and are up for the challenge we can venture further with the guide along the rugged marble ridge-line towards the summit of Mt Arthur.

Alternatively, perch on a rock and soak in the view before reuniting with the group for the descent.

Accommodaton: Cabin accommodation – group share

Distance: 8.5 to 18.5km.

Time: 4-8 hours hiking

Thursday 26th March 2020

Paparoa National Park

After a hearty breakfast, the day begins with a relaxing drive toward the West Coast along the mighty Buller River.

On the drive we get our first glimpse of New Zealand’s impressive Podocarp forest.

Arriving at the coast, our guide drops us at the top of the coastal walk to Cape Foulwind (aptly named by Captain Cook – as beware the seals are a bit smelly!).

We then rejoin the guide at the seal colony near Tauranga Bay before driving along the scenic West Coast en route to one of the country’s best-kept secrets – Paparoa National Park for our first overnight hike.

Hiking up the rumbling Fox River, we learn the unique Kiwi art of river crossing.

This will come in handy in order to reach the campsite under tonight’s accommodation – the amazing Ballroom Overhang – a massive fluviatile cave.

Crank up the campfire and settle in for the night for a real New Zealand authentic experience.

Accommodation: Ballroom Overhang, camping.

Hiking Distance: 8km

Hiking time: approx. 4 hours

Friday  27th March  2020

Heading out from the Ballroom Overhang, we wander along quaint rivers, channeled through towering limestone cliffs covered in lush native rainforest.

The scenery in this area is truly breathtaking, and unparalleled in the South Island. Take the opportunity to explore nearby caves, have a swim, and study the stalactites.

Leaving the rivers behind, we hike along an old inland pack-track that winds its way through tranquil native forest before emerging at the road end where our van awaits.

A short drive gets us to the small tourist town of Punakaiki.

Here we can grab a coffee and wander through the geologic phenomenon that is the Pancake Rocks – scientists still cannot agree on how they formed. If the tide is right, you will get to witness the magnificent blowholes in action.

Tonight, we stay in lovely properties set in the bush near the coast. A saunter down to the beach to view the sunset is highly recommended.

Accommodation: Twin Share holiday house.

Hiking Distance: 8km

Hiking time: approx. 4-hours

Saturday  28th March 2020

Arthurs Pass/Hokitika

Weather permitting, it is cycling day*

This morning is a short drive down the coast to the historic and quaint town of Hokitika.

Get fitted out with bikes and cycle the stunning West Coast Cycle Trail,  between Milltown and Kumara which follows a series of old bush tramlines built in the 1860s to cart coal.

The 33 kilometre ride starts at the quirky collection of replica Wild West themed buildings at Cowboy Paradise – this really is the Wild West!

From here the trail winds through a mixed landscape of lush farmland and beautiful regenerating rainforest. It crosses a series of bridges over mountain streams before following a trail around several reservoirs to the historic town of Kumara.

At the end of the day there is time for a celebratory drink at the beautifully restored Theatre Royal Hotel before checking into our nearby accommodation.

*Note: If you do not wish to cycle then there is the option for a self guided short hike nearby.

Accommodation: Cottage style – twin share.

Tonight we have our Traditional Women’s Fitness Adventures Celebration Dinner and Awards evening.

Cycling distance 33km

Cycling time: approx. 4 hours

Sunday 29thMarch 2020

Return to Christchurch and home

This morning we turn our nose towards Christchurch and home

It’s a spectacular drive across the Southern Alps via Arthurs Pass.

A meander among the limestone crags at Castle Hill or a short walk in Arthurs Pass National Park to stretch the legs before the drive across the plains to Christchurch is also a must!

We will aim to have you back in Christchurch by early to mid-afternoon in time to catch any flights home to Australia that evening.

Meals: Breakfast|Lunch

One of the most common asked questions is “Will I be fit enough?”

As soon as you book into the NZ Coast, Bush and Canyons adventure you can get started with training.

Through booking into the adventure early and allowing time to train, those with a current introductory level of fitness will find this an achieveable goal – provided you put in the training.

  3. boosting your fitness

The training program has been developed by Women’s Fitness Adventures, based on years of experience and qualifications in both the fitness industry and hiking in the outdoors.

From the moment you book on to the New Zealand Coast, Bush and Canyons Adventure, you will begin to make new friends. It all starts with the training.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What you carry

On the New Zealand Coast, Bush and Canyons adventure your hike will consist of mainly day pack hiking. The weight in your pack is approximately 6-8kg (personal items, clothing, water, snacks, camera, raincoat etc)

On days 4 and 5, when completing the trek to the Ballroom Overhang you will need to carry all your personal equipment  in a full backpack (these will be provided if you don’t have your own).

This includes sleeping bag, along with a few personal items, clothing and your share of the group food. Depending on personal gear and toiletries, the average pack weight should be 12-15kg.

Soon after your initial deposit, a comprehensive gear list will be supplied to you.  You may wish to purchase our essential pack items from the Women’s Fitness Adventures shop if you do not already have them. This includes thermals, raincoat, thermal gloves and hiking socks.

  • Fitness Level

Our 7 day, 6 night NZ Coast, Bush and Canyons adventure is a demanding walk that requires a high level of fitness (graded moderate).  We advise you do as much training as you can before the trip.  The more you train for this hike, the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world.

Brisbane participants have the option of attending monthly hike training sessions. Non Brisbane residents have a monthly call and a training plan written if desired. With plenty of advance notice of the trip and time to train, hikers at beginner/intermediate level make this a manageable and rewarding fitness goal, provided you do the training.

  • Weather

It is important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. It is very important you bring the right gear for the conditions.  New Zealand weather can be unpredictable, storms can arise very quickly and heavy rain  can fall at any time of the year. A comprehensive gear list will be provided once we have secured your booking.

In the event of extreme weather conditions, the adventure may vary from the itinerary. Please be aware of this and accept this as part of the adventure. Your personal safety is our highest priority. The itinerary is also subject to change with any change in community regulations as well as governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control.
